Over 25 years since the release of the ground-breaking debut ENIGMA album, MCMXC a.D., Michael Cretu - the founder of this genre-defying act, and its composer and producer - has announced a brand new project, The Fall Of A Rebel Angel. The musical act, known globally as ENIGMA, has proved one of the most successful of the last quarter-century, delivering more than 70 million sales across seven albums, 60 Number One albums around the world, and in excess of 100 Platinum awards.

Eight years is a long time to wait between albums, yet that is how long Enigma frontman Michael Cretu made us wait for The Fall of a Rebel Angel. However, Enigma’s eighth studio album is finally here, and I am happy to say it was worth the wait! The best thing about it is that once you listen to it, you’ll realize that it’s like Enigma never left. This album is just as original, fresh, and engaging as past albums…all without resorting to much repetition and pandering. That’s even despite having a track named “Sadeness (Part II)” and the wayward sonic effect from Enigma 7.

Rebel Angel is a concept album. And while it can be argued that all Enigma albums are essentially concept albums, this one really earns that description, because it was created as a soundtrack to a story. That story is told on the album’s 2-disc Deluxe Edition, though truth be told, that part doesn’t really add much. But the songs on the album proper are cohesive even more so than the songs in other Enigma albums. The record moves from one melancholy song to another in a way that just fits. It even has an overarching melody that defines the album and makes an appearance on three tracks throughout. It should also be noted that this is the quietest Enigma album ever made…you will hear nothing that’s too upbeat (except perhaps maybe “Oxygen Red”). Certainly, nothing comparable to songs like “Mea Culpa”, “Return to Innocence”, “TNT For The Brain”, “Modern Crusaders”, “Push The Limits”, “Look of Today”, or “Seven Lives”.

Circle Eight – The opening track features the familiar “Enigma horn”, followed by a female voice speaking the introduction. Very reminiscent of the opening for The Cross of Changes.

The Omega Point – The first proper track sets up the theme of Rebel Angel as it features the album’s overarching melody. The track begins very quietly, but through the course of its over 6-minute runtime swells into a powerful, loud bassline reminiscent of dubstep but not really.

Diving – This is more of an interlude than a song. It is a very quiet track that culminates in a beautiful soundscape of synths.

The Die Is Cast – This is the first vocal piece of the album and is one of its greatest moments. Guest singer Mark Josher was the perfect choice here. His soft, melodic voice fits the song perfectly.

Mother – This track is highly reminiscent of something from Enigma’s debut album. Singer Anggun seductively speaks the lyrics while an electronic piano floats above a slow, sensual beat.

Angus Dei – This features the melody from “The Omega Point” again, but this time, it’s played as the bassline while other elements float above it. This should give your speakers a good workout…the sound is deep and pulsing. A standout track!

Sadeness (Part II) – The “sequel” to the smash hit from Enigma’s debut album isn’t really much of a sequel at all, and that’s how it should be. Sequels to songs have never made much sense to me, so I’m glad Cretu made this something different. The organ riff from Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” command the song while Anggun’s breathy voice speaks its French lyrics. The song is more of an answer to “Sadeness (Part I)”. For the second half of the song, Anggun’s voice soars as she belts out the song’s climax.

Lost in Nothingness – A very pretty, experimental piece. Distorted synths float above very minimalistic music. A couple of minutes of this, and it’s over.

Oxygen Red – Anggun’s final track on this album is more striking than the rest of the tracks. A good song, but ultimately falls flat as it repeats its distorted vocal riff too much. This one could’ve been so much more.

Confession of the Mind – An amazing song…a deep, slow, sensual beat permeates this dreamy track, as the “Omega Point” melody makes one final appearance before a pipe organ gorgeously finishes the song.

Absolvo – Another small interlude…this one is sad and melancholy.

Amen – This is the album’s masterpiece. Electronic duo Aquilo provide vocals here, and it’s beyond amazing. A sad, morose vibe throughout, the song swells into a wonderful crescendo before coming to a pretty abrupt close. It is the perfect closing song, and one of the best Enigma songs ever made.

And that’s pretty much it. It’s a brief, 44-minute trip, but doesn’t really need to be any longer. This album stands proudly among the other seven, and it’s perfect just how it is. When artists have long gaps between albums, the resulting album tends to have an identity crisis…like it wants to be new but sound like the past glory days (and failing). This did not happen with The Fall of a Rebel Angel. Cretu has simply created a new chapter in an existing legacy. I truly hope that we will eventually get Enigma 9, and that we won’t have to wait so long next time!

The Fall Of A Rebel Angel [2 CD][Deluxe Edition ]

Let me say that first, I've been following Enigma most of my life since I was a teenager. Over that span of time, the album I've needed to hear always arrived at the time when I needed to hear it. There are no coincidences. In that same time, I've heard the music evolve. Almost always a different and unique sound for each album. Some I liked more than others, like many here have said. But there is one thing I cannot do and that is to compare each one to the one (or ones) that came before it. Each album is its own work. Yes, there may be ties to previous albums (sounds, chants, etc.), but that is it. If there was no musical evolution for Enigma, we would be hearing the same music, over and over again, which in truth takes us nowhere. This album is truly a musical evolution, but the themes that it presents are unmistakable: that of a personal evolution and redemption. This has nothing to do with religion yet at the same time everything to do with it. If you listen with an open mind, free of expectation and any desire to compare to what has come before, you'll get it.

Now, for the music. If you followed the story at the Enigma website, you have the context in which the album is being presented. The story behind the music. It's almost a requirement to listen / view that before listening to the music. Listening to the album in the order presented, you can follow the story. The tracks that sound like fluff are not that, but merely transition points into the next "big" track. All in all, one of the most beautifully put together albums I've heard in a very long time. It's been 8 years since the last album, but IMO well worth the wait!

Tracks:
1 - Circle Eight - here we find our signature intro to an Enigma album, again presented a little different, but the essence still there ....
2 - The Omega Point - driving us forward into the story (you did read / watch / listen to those, right?)
3 - Diving - a transition .... gorgeous textures here to carry us into .....
4 - The Die Is Cast - heavy beats behind this one, again pushing us and reminding us things are set (i.e. the die is cast)
5 - Mother - beautiful track with Anggun vocals, reminding us that there is a safe place in this modern world full of danger
6 - Agnus Dei - more textures here and another transition point, with a driving beat also
7 - Sadeness Pt. II - absolutely stunning sequel to the original. Not perfect, but powerful in it's own right. Stunning vocals here by Anggun again..
8 - Lost In Nothingness - another transition point to the next piece .... not fluff or filler, but it does wander slightly
9 - Oxygen Red - moving us to the next place, again driving beats to lift us and powerful vocals from Anggun with the message we need to hear
10 - Confession Of The Mind - would seem like a transition piece .... and throwback to the first album, essentially capturing some of the essence of that album, but still conveying the message of the story for this album
11 - Absolvo - the last transition track ..... a peaceful, calm almost meditative track but also the perfect lead-in to ....
12 - Amen - this is THE track that I feel Cretu has been building to throughout the album. One of the most hauntingly beautiful tracks I have ever heard in my entire life. This is truly a masterpiece that we have been given with this track. Perfect beats, perfect lyrics that are heart wrenching. This song will simultaneously break your heart and lift you up. Sheer perfection and the perfect end to the album. I will admit I missed the fade out of the intro like in albums past, but realized that the door is left open for whatever is to come next. Listen closely at the very end for the whispered phrase in Latin .....

This is an amazing album in so many different regards and I have no words for much of it. Enigma is about feeling as is life. Cretu said it himself at one point. A rewarding experience can be had in listening to this album if you do the homework and understand the context and story behind it. It's still good without that, but there is a deeper experience that can be had. I had the 2-CD Deluxe edition that includes the story for each track, but do yourself a favor and hit the website for more about the stories and not just the audio. Be present for the music and remember .... the past is gone for good.

When I received news in 2016 of a new Enigma album, I jumped on the train to keep with the updates. When the stories of each song were released once a week until the physical release, the anticipation was building because I was ready after eight years for the album.

I pre-ordered the single disc with the track listing error and then I opted in for the deluxe with the bonus disc and the booklet expanding the concepts explaining some of the different terms in the stories. I certainly don't regret the switch.

While "The Screen Behind the Mirror" will always be my favorite Enigma album, Rebel Angel's art, story and music are absolutely beautiful. My favorites are "The Omega Point", "The Die is Cast" and "Oxygen Red". I also like "Diving", "Agnus Dei" and "Lost in Nothingness".

"...All seems fine. No surprises. Life as usual. That's your problem. Something's wrong..."
Yes, there is something wrong! On the back of the disc and on the last page in the booklet
14 track listed. That is the Wrong! The disc contains only 12: "Sadness ( Part 1 )" and
"Return to Innocence" are not on the disc!
Apart of that, the program is excellent. The other thing to mention is technical aspect of
the disc - it is showcasing excellence of recording engineers.
That's how discs must be recorded. ***** Five Stars well deserved anyway!!!
