Product Description
Castle Panic is a cooperative tower defense board game for 1 to 6 players, ages 10 and up. The co op element makes Castle Panic a great family game and the perfect kick off for your weekly game night. You must work together to defend your Castle, in the center of the board, from Monsters that attack out of the forest, at the edges of the board. Trade cards, hit and slay Monsters, and plan strategies together to keep your Castle towers intact. The players either win or lose together, but only the player with the most victory points is declared the Master Slayer. Players must balance the survival of the group with their own desire to win.

In Castle Panic players must work together to defend their castle, in the center of the board, from monsters that attack out of the forest, at the edges of the board. This game is rated for 10+ In my experience this is about right. My 10 year old loves this game. My 5 year old (who can't read yet) loves to be the helper. The graphics are simple with no blood or guts to explain to younger children. The ability to read is extremely helpful as the cards and tokens are small as are the pictures. This makes it difficult for younger players to interpret what is going on. Additionally the somewhat complex game play mechanics can overwhelm younger players.
Setup:
At first the setup and "scale" of the game can be a bit overwhelming but after a few times through there were no issues. There are a lot of pieces and placement. Nothing too difficult. No crazy dice towers to build here. The rule book is long, I would recommend reading it before hand. Most everything is straight forward. You can omit the "Special Monsters" to simplify the game play and odds of winning (if that is your thing).
Game play and Mechanics:
This is a turned based game. I would not call it Euro Style, but definitely not a competitive player game. There is a fixed set of events that happen on each turn that guide the course of play. These rules create a very real sense of urgency. The board is laid out in a radial fashion (action on all sides) which makes for interesting, and at times, non-linear game play. Cooperation is the key. Planning and execution on your current turn and future turns is is required for success. Game difficulty quickly advances unless cooperation is used. There are some "light role-playing" elements added with the Special Monsters and classes of warriors. Nothing to overwhelming here.

The first few times playing will be longer until you understand the flow of game play.
With 2 people this game takes about 1 hour. With 4 people it takes about 1.5 hours.

Every game is different. The radial nature of the board and random drawing of monsters add an infinite number of possibilities. No two games will be the same. There is an expansion, "Castle Panic: The Wizard's Tower" that add some more advanced concepts, game play, and depth that might suit older players more.
Who should get this game:
If you are looking for a cooperative, relatively non-competitive, game that is fast paced with varied replay value this game is for you. If you are looking for a "light" introduction to role-playing elements this game is for you. For anyone under 9 or 10 years this might get a little overwhelming, but with a little help everyone can have fun. This game can be played with as little as 2 people but I would recommend 4 people for the most fun.

This fit the bill perfectly - in particular, the co-operative element of the game makes a huge difference to the level of interest - my youngest often feels a bit out of his depth with some games, and he loves being in everyone else's team and working together to defeat the invaders.
The game is easy enough to learn. 3 colours split into 6 sectors are arrayed round your castle and walls.
For the first phase, you get cards to deal with the invaders, which can attack a specific colour sector, or rebuild walls and other defensive actions.
There is another couple of phases for discarding/swapping these cards, then the exciting part comes - the monsters move in - followed by a draw of new monster tokens - something things like Giant Boulders, but usually means more monsters emerging for the forest to trudge towards your castle.
After this round, you go back to the start, and do your best to thin out the attacking hordes.
It's great fun - the board is clear and well laid out, and the monster tokens are clear, with a few more powerful monsters mixed in amongst the Goblin/Orc/Trolls.
The balance of the game is great - most games end with a defeat, or if we do manage to win, it's generally with our walls/towers in ruins, and we've just managed to hold on.
My sons are 8 year old (got the game no bother and loves it), and 6 (who took a wee bit longer to understand the phasing, but only 3/4 games, and now loves it).
This is a great game, bit different from the usual suspects, and highly recommended.
