The camera is amazing for any phone under $200. In fact, can't get over the quality-to-price ratio for the quality of pictures the dual-camera on this phone delivers. I prefer it over the iPhone 8 any day for both speed, focusing, customization of the camera (you can change literally every professional setting of this camera, including ISO, shutter speed, etc). The HDR pictures are great and a nifty feature is the Bokeh effect that can be attained which, if it were Apple, would require the iPhone 8 plus. The fingerprint gestures that Moto provides make me feel right at home since it can be configured to work much like the iPhone 8 sensor, except this one is far more responsive.
Overall the speed of this phone is impressive. Every app opens quickly, is extremely responsive. Haven't experienced lag in anything, including website browsing some sites that would bring my iphone to it's knees.
The fast charging is probably one of my favorite features. I'm really bad at pluggin in my phone until it's telling me that it's dead.. Well this thing charges in no time flat and then lasts the entire day with juice left at the end, no matter how hard I use it.
Android has come a long, long way since the last Android phone I have owned. Everything is so tighly integrated with this latest Android, even more so than iOS, which is really hard to believe. An example is the Facebook integration. Every app that can login through FB on Android is extremely quick, easy and just works, whereas half the apps on my iPhone that can login through FB would take me to a login screen browser to login to the FB that I was already logged into the app with. I haven't experienced any of these setbacks on the Moto X. It just... works.
The screen is one of the brightest I have seen on any phone. In fact, I have my brightness at 25% and it's plenty bright. 100% surpasses the brigtness of my iPhone considerably. The resolution is extremely crisp, everything looks great, clean and smooth.
One of my favorite features and one that I coudln't wait to try was the muti-bluetooth speaker setup. This is one cool feature! You can link multiple bluetooth speakers to this phone and have them play simultaneously. This turns your common cheap bluetooth speakers into a multi-speaker surround sound type setup. Fascinating!
The internal speaker is plenty loud and sound quality is quite good. The iPhone 8 may have it beat here, but only by an insignificant amount. The 8 isn't quite as loud but the sound quality of the 8 is a bit better considering it plays in stereo and not mono.
The only thing I haven't figured out how to do yet is when notifications come in, it pauses the music playing. This annoys me to no end. I don't mind the notification sound but please don't stop the music completely. If anybody knows a way to change this setting please let me know, for I've exhausted myself trying to figure it out. I don't attribute this to the phone but to Android, no stars deducted for this.
Overall if you're looking for a budget phone that does pretty much everything good and some things extremely well, then this is the one! I don't see myself going back to an iPhone anytime in the distance future. Sorry, Apple. You're overpriced and I'm actually kinda upset that you blinded me from the Android world for so long while it secretly surpassed everything you can do.
One feature that I've already found useful is the two-shake activation of the main camera LED flashlight! While not really a phone performance thing, having access to a flashlight without having to unlock the screen or pull down a menu is definitely handy. I also like the Amazon Alexa access by voice... I can easily turn on/off lights at home, raise/lower furnace set points, turn off the Christmas tree, etc with a simple voice command when driving or elsewhere if I need to. I'm not a cell phone game player / time waster, but all the standard apps work great. About the only thing I'm not a fan of and will have to get used to is the location of the "back," "home," and "recents" buttons being on the bottom of the screen. I've had mostly Samsung phones up until now, and they tend to have those buttons located off the screen at the very bottom of the phone. Of course, the Moto has a fingerprint reader where the Samsung "home" button would typically be, so it makes sense to move these buttons upward a bit.
As for the fingerprint reader, it works almost flawlessly. I set it up to read both my index finger and thumb, the latter an option for unlocking the phone with the same hand as the phone is being held in. I've found the index finger works every time, but the thumb not always. This may be because it's really looking at too many potential angles, or maybe it's rougher hands from the cold weather.
The phone back is VERY slick (as in slippery)... nice looking, but totally impractical to use this way without a high likelihood of dropping the thing. I found a nice, lightweight black case that fits the phone very well without adding much overall thickness, has all the right holes, and allows the use of side buttons without needing too much additional force. I've never understood what value there is in making the back of phones look so nice when you never see them, but I suppose that's just one of the many mysteries of life.
As for making/receiving calls, emails and text messages, so far it has worked flawlessly both in wifi mode and when operating thru cell towers. We use wifi calling at home since we don't have much cell signal at the house, and the phone transitions seamlessly between wifi and cell calling when leaving and returning to the house. I've noticed that the cell signal is actually a bit more usable at the house than it was with my previous Samsung phone as this phone's ability to use the signal level here is apparently a tad better. Voice quality is clear in either mode. Text message notification has been very reliable... sometimes the Samsung wouldn't sound a notification if you were in a text exchange, which was annoying if you set the phone down and found a text later that didn't notify you. Overall, everything seems to work great.
The bottom line for me: this is REALLY a nice phone! I really don't understand why anyone would want to spend upwards of $500 for a leading edge phone when what you get for that additional money is so marginal... I suspect it's generally more about just having to have the best thing out there this month and money just isn't a factor. But otherwise, if you simply want a great phone with excellent features and performance, you just can't beat the Moto X4 for under $200.
