Book Review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/book-tou...

Birthday Experience is the third book (fourth if you count the prequel novella) in the “Experiences” series. I previously read and reviewed the first book, First Experience, and the second book, Weekend Experience. I enjoyed both of the previous books, so I was curious about the next book.

In this installment, Kelly’s twenty-fifth birthday is coming up. Sam invites a few of her friends and hosts a party for her birthday, complete with a theme, games, and the atmopshere the reader is used to in this books: one of openness, adventure, and exploring sexual experiences. Sam has planned most of it, including some games that will push the boundaries of the other guests, and in particular Kelly’s boundaries and courage.

To any reader, it’ll be obvious how different Kelly and Sam are. Kelly is a young woman, Sam is an older widower, old enough to be her father in fact. And whereas the series starts out with a mutual attraction between the two of them, and them deciding to take things further and have some fun, it’s now clear that there’s something more between Kelly and Sam than just being attracted to one another. They share a deeper connection, a more intimate relationship. They’re on a journey together, to find themselves, to learn more about the other, to explore the edge of their own desires. It’s not just Kelly learning from Sam anymore – Sam learns a great deal from her as well. And it’s this relationship, this bond, that forms the core of this book, and that makes it unique and different from other books in the same genre.

Of course there’s also fun, BDSM, role-playing, fantasies, and all that, and while there’s definitely an erotic element, the focus is on intimacy, trust, openness.

Writing is, as usual, quite good. The plot is imaginative and creative, and even the secondary characters come across as real people. This is an enjoyable and entertaining read, but more than anything, it’ll make the reader think about boundaries, about intimacy, about the meaning of love, of bonds, of the unique relationship people can have with one another.

Birthday Experience Is Quite A Read; Author Does It Again

In “Birthday Experiences,” the fourth volume of Simone Freier's “Experiences” series, we find Kelly and Sam's relationship maturing. It is maturing to the point that they now say “I love you,” something that was only on the periphery of their relationship in the first three volumes of the series.

Freier, a skillful author whose ability to create a compelling scene, a word-picture, if you will, is among best that we have seen in the many authors whose work we have reviewed in the last couple of years, again uses the world of sexual play as the canvas on which she continues to paint the relationship of Kelly and Sam. It is a relationship that one would never expect to work but it does.

Why would Kelly, a beautiful young woman, who celebrates her 25th birthday in this volume of the series, even say the words “I love you” to a man old enough to be her father? Indeed, Kelly knows Sam's sons as she watched them play soccer when she was a child. A widower, Sam knows Kelly's parents as they are his friends and he knew her as a child. Now they are lovers and they plumb the depths of sexual fantasy and play using, among other things, the usual toolkit of paddles, flails, plugs and the many implements used in the world of BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism).

Are they true practitioners of BDSM? On the whole, they use it as a medium to explore not only the relationship that is developing but also in exploring themselves. Comfortable with their basic sexuality, the couple use the tools of BDSM to push their limits; to expand their life experience, and to just have some fun. Though Freier mentions the dom/domme relationship, many times, but always tangentially as it relates to Sam and Kelly, they are neither true practitioners of BDSM nor do they hide from it. They use the realm of BDSM to explore their fantasies and play out their fantasies. It is more like they are using BDSM as a GPS mapping device of their lives as a couple and their relationship.

That relationship expands in “Birthday Experiences,” as Sam invites Kelly's four best friends to her 25th birthday party. It is a party that is full of surprises for both Kelly and her friends. It is also a party full of surprises for the reader. Of course, there participants engage in the basics that are associated with the world of sex play and fantasy such as spanking, wild fantasy role-play, some paddling and the like and they like it. However, if you look beyond the trappings, if you will, of the world in which Sam, Kelly and now her friends travel, you will see that “Birthday Experiences” is about far more than just sexual play and fantasy.

At its basic level, the story of Kelly and Sam is as old as the hills. It is a dual story of a young woman, who, introduced to the world of sexual and fantasy play, begins to find herself. No it isn't a story about a young woman's travels to “find herself,” in the sense that she doesn't know who she is. Instead, it is a story about her growth as a person. Kelly, to be sure has her issues, but at heart, she is happy with the person that she has become as she has grown to become a woman. After meeting Sam and being pulled into the world of sexual play and fantasy, she begins to grow into not only a more sexually mature woman, but also a more aware woman, in general. The duality of their story is Sam's becoming.

Sam, married to Margaret for many years, lost her about 5 years before he met Kelly, by chance, when he attended a party at a couple's home. Sam and Margaret were friendly with them before her passing. After meeting Kelly, he takes a chance and asks her to lunch and is attracted to her. He then takes a chance to see if she is interested in his world of fantasy and role-playing. Oh, she is and more, much more. Indeed, they are on their way to becoming a pair of explorers, if you will, who not only explore the world of BDSM, but also themselves. Kelly's growth is explored as is Sam's coming out of his lonely existence, putting away his love for his late wife and finding that he could love again.

He becomes a bigger man as Kelly becomes a bigger woman. They click on many levels. The people they encounter in their search, Fiona and Alex, Julie, Kathy, Linda (Kelly's friends) not only become part of their lives but they also help them grow, especially Kelly's girlfriends at her birthday party.

It is quite a birthday party, too, as you will find out if you read Simone Freier's fourth installment of the “Experiences” series.

I have read many reviews of Freier's work and I believe that some of my colleagues in this world are missing the essential point of the author's work. They focus on the semi-pornographic nature that BDSM implies and the look at the work of the author with somewhat prurient eyes. They are like little children who, on finding a slightly racy or pornographic Blu-ray® disc in the video library of one of their parents, ogle at it while also going overboard about it.

If they would take a look at the whole series and view it as a tapestry upon which a very skillful author paints a compelling picture of not only Kelly's growth, but also that of Sam and their relationship then they would begin to see what seems to me to be the more meaningful level that Freier is writing about.

Though her topic might be somewhat offbeat, it is the medium she uses to create a skillfully written and powerful story whose characters are filled with life. Freier's characters have substance; they are three-dimensional, fully formed characters. It takes a talented author to create that type of character as well as a story that is larger than its plotline would suggest.

I believe if you take it from this angle you will see that Simone Freier is an excellent author who knows how to use a topic to create a real and enjoyable story. Freier is an author who gets you to suspend your belief and accept her reality, for the time you are between the covers of “Birthday Experiences” or while you are enjoying your tablet. I just wonder, after all this, how Freier will top the first four volumes she has written. She has given herself an incredible challenge. I hope I get the chance to see how she pulls this off.

`Where openness is required and intimacy expected'

Simone Freier was a nurse prior to her becoming an author. One of her pet peeves is reading erotica that gets simple anatomy wrong! She is continually bewildered by women who haven't explored their own bodies. Another pet peeve is the mostly hung-up Victorian society prevalent in the U.S., and she tries her hardest to change that by introducing people to new sexual and sensual experiences through her erotic writing. The activities in Simone's books are quite realistic, as she has participated in most of these in 'real life', as surreal as it may seem. Reading her new works certainly adds respect for her talent as a writer of erotic literature. And just as foreplay is the key to satisfying sex, Freier starts this her second book in a series of books labeled EXPERIENCES with some well written suggestive but not pornographic storyline. Once the reader catches the drift of her intent the urge is to stay with the book to see how far she will escort us into the world of sexual fetishes.

Take some time to study the cover of this book - it will get you in the mood for what is to come. Sam narrates this episode - now Book 4 in the Experiences Series (and yes, this reader has read them all) - and after a satisfying weekend experience (Book 3) with Kelly and her sexy friends (`And then there were the other `participants' of our weekend - Julie and Linda, two of Kelly's best friends, who had surprised her - all of us - with their acceptance of and enthusiasm for their spanking experiences. And Julie's masturbation scene, as she lay across my lap, observed closely by Kelly and Linda. Of course, there was also Barbara, the esthetician, who had done her job very professionally and with an obviously good result. And, finally, Fiona and Alex, whom we had met at the pond'), Sam is planning a birthday party for Kelly - a party which he plans to satisfy himself as much as giving Kelly a lift. He plans a Pirate Ship theme with all the possible permutations that will bring for his pleasure. Simone then switches the narrative to Kelly who relates her version of the weekend experience - but with a few twists. But before the Birthday Party event there are multiple `preps' (such as extended piercing, injections, and other exam room events) with some of the expected guests and with each new experience we the readers discover more fetishes as well as more views about he way different people view these outside the box (so to speak) sexual experiences. Needless to say the Birthday Party (again as narrated by both Sam and Kelly - a very strong writing device for Simone) is an over the top event, with more new experiences than imaginable.

Simone Freier has the world of erotica down pat. The book is rather lengthy and the description of some of the interplay can become repetitive, but the special aspect of the story is that we recognize and like the characters as people. These are not tropes used like tools - these are people about whom we care. And THAT is fine writing from an author who knows her genre.

I've gotten hooked on this experience series, despite the fact that it is dramatically out of my typical wheelhouse. Ms. Freier is a gifted writer and can spark flames of passion and curiosity in even the most staunch or conservative reader (neither of which I am, but I can't imagine anyone not feeling some unusual urges when these pages flip past. As with the earlier "Experience" books by Freier, this is tastefully written erotica with a unique twist. This particular birthday party is like nothing you'd ever expect, and I particularly like how this "experience" was more contained, allowing for more exploration and detail than some of the earlier installments in the series.

Kelly continues to be a fascinating and dynamic woman to follow through these interactions and sexual developments, and I have enjoyed how the author has shown more and more of her protagonist's mind and heart with each subsequent book. I feel as though I know this character, can almost anticipate her inner monologues, but not in a predictable or boring way. I feel an intimacy with the character that is completely due to Freier's artful way with words and scene-building. The ambience of a setting is challenging to express on paper, let alone create thoroughly enough to make a reader feel such powerful and complex emotions. It's a rare gift, and this entire book is a fun, whimsical, thought-provoking, and (let's admit it....sexy) story that will draw you into the series even further and get you asking yourself a few questions about where your boundaries are, and whether you want to push them any further.

It’s Kelly’s birthday and for Sam, her role-playing lover, it’s a chance to take the adventure to a whole other intimate level. In a racy get-together with some close friends, Sam introduces them to role-playing in a way sure to expose their personal limits. It’s a night of fantasy, eroticism and fetish and one they’ll never forget.
I read all of Simone Freier’s other books in this series and anxiously awaited this one. The subject matter isn’t for everyone, but it’s certainly an arousing read that tugs at your adventurous side! If you liked Fifty Shades of Grey, don’t miss out on this. 5 stars!

Sam has something special planned for Kelly’s birthday. A gathering with a select group of friends sets the stage for an event of pushing personal limits. Role playing and fantasy are in abundance and her friends are introduced to a whole new world, their eyes wide open to a surreal experience.
As was the case with the other Experience books, this last book certainly doesn’t disappoint. It’s definitely a novel for mature audiences only and certainly contains racy content. Some of the material could make the sensitive reader uncomfortable. Very graphic in detail, but a great read nonetheless. Exciting read!

Happy Naughty Birthday!

Book four and it's just as hot and sexy as the others in the series! Sam and Kelly invite her friends for some special games, increasing the connection between Sam and Kelly, the unlikely couple. The continuous connection and openness, that brings trust into their relationship is broadened. The entire series surrounds their love for their fantasies and fetishes play a major part in their love for each other, and how it grows, into more intimacy. Recommended to those who don't blush with the deep exploration of dark BDSM fetishes and fantasies.
