About this movie

Inspired by the real life of singer/songwriter Alyssa Robbins, Becks follows a musician who moves back to her childhood home in St. Louis after a crushing breakup with her longtime girlfriend. While performing for tips at a local tavern and struggling to reconnect with her ultra-Catholic mother, she strikes up a unique friendship with the wife of an old nemesis. Becks begins to discover her musical voice as she performs deeply personal songs about her ex and the loss of their relationship. Driven by an original score, the film’s musical numbers bring a unique new voice to the American musical movie.

As someone who isn’t a fan of the romance genre, I found Becks surprisingly enjoyable. This is because the film takes its time to create and develop its story and characters. While the story is familiar, the realistic and complex characters as well as the solid performance and directing are what make the film great. I also liked that the film was able to find the humor and levity in the story. Becks also has many great musical scenes due to its original songs. I would strongly recommend Becks to anyone even people who aren’t fans of romance movies.

Becks is absolutely and whole-heartedly genuine and authentic, to the point where the line between reality and the film are blurred. All of the characters feel real, with actual, motivations, flaws, and beliefs, and aren’t reduced to archetypes, despite how easy it would’ve been for the filmmakers, giving the film some actual weight, and the moral and ethical dilemmas debatable and conflicting. There is no “right way” the film is arguing for on any issue, and lets the characters argue their sides for the audience to decide for themselves. Everyone can, and everyone should go and give Becks a watch.

One of the many things I really liked about watching this film was the complexity of the characters depicted in this movie. I think that by giving characters like Becks multiple layers to their storyline such as angsty and sarcastic, but also deeply sensitive and vulnerable, it adds a level of dynamism to the film as a whole. The writers in this film did a really great job creating three dimensional characters. Most definitely recommend giving this film a watch!
