About this movie

Inspired by the real life of singer/songwriter Alyssa Robbins, Becks follows a musician who moves back to her childhood home in St. Louis after a crushing breakup with her longtime girlfriend. While performing for tips at a local tavern and struggling to reconnect with her ultra-Catholic mother, she strikes up a unique friendship with the wife of an old nemesis. Becks begins to discover her musical voice as she performs deeply personal songs about her ex and the loss of their relationship. Driven by an original score, the film’s musical numbers bring a unique new voice to the American musical movie.

Throughout the course of the film, BECKS was able to draw me in for so many reasons and all of them made me love the film more and more as it progressed. Whether it was the music, subtle comedy, or realism, I felt actually connected to the movie and also to Becks as a person. I found myself rooting for her and hoping she would be able to get her life together. I won’t be the only person that is able to relate to this and that makes the film so important because this story is one that I feel has been overlooked in Hollywood. Now that we have BECKS, many more people’s voices can be heard and expressed. Audiences that see this film will find their own reasons to fall in love with it and I highly recommend it to all.

As someone who isn’t a fan of the romance genre, I found Becks surprisingly enjoyable. This is because the film takes its time to create and develop its story and characters. While the story is familiar, the realistic and complex characters as well as the solid performance and directing are what make the film great. I also liked that the film was able to find the humor and levity in the story. Becks also has many great musical scenes due to its original songs. I would strongly recommend Becks to anyone even people who aren’t fans of romance movies.

Becks is absolutely and whole-heartedly genuine and authentic, to the point where the line between reality and the film are blurred. All of the characters feel real, with actual, motivations, flaws, and beliefs, and aren’t reduced to archetypes, despite how easy it would’ve been for the filmmakers, giving the film some actual weight, and the moral and ethical dilemmas debatable and conflicting. There is no “right way” the film is arguing for on any issue, and lets the characters argue their sides for the audience to decide for themselves. Everyone can, and everyone should go and give Becks a watch.
