Works well with the 12" MacBook Retina, though not perfect

Works well with the 12" MacBook Retina, though not perfect
When I made the jump to a 12" MacBook, I was annoyed that my existing Monoprice 27" 2560x1440 monitor would not be compatible at full res, but came across this newly-released option that would also resolve the single port issue. I strongly prefer a 2560x1440 resolution for workspace layout, and since LG's USB-C offering only comes in 4K while 5K monitors are ridiculously expensive and would probably seriously tax a 12" MacBook, this seemed like the best option. Overall, I like it a lot and it's better than not having the screen, but it's definitely got the sort of issues you might expect as early adopter. Looking forward to the USB-C peripheral market continuing to develop. In the meantime, this is a solid companion.Picture is very good, especially after doing color calibration via OSX, but I wouldn't call it great. The matte surface is good for reducing glare, but I can't help but wonder if the picture would look a bit sharper with a glossy glass surface. It runs at the full 60Hz, and can also run at 720p for the HiDPI/Retina look. However, the difference between the MacBook's Retina screen and the Acer running at the normal 1x is minimal from a normal usage distance, and there are advantages in my work to having both types of screens, so nothing about that difference bothers me.I happen to like the aesthetics of the white+gold and the stand, which serves as a handy spot to corral items like earbuds and a USB 3.0 hub, but I can certainly understand that it's not to everyone's taste. The monitor is not physically adjustable in any way and is not VESA-compliant, so if that's important to you/your setup, definitely don't buy this. I don't think it's particularly flimsy - I have it on an adjustable standing desk and it doesn't jiggle any more than anything else when moving around. The on-board speakers are terrible, both in quality and control, and honestly would probably have been better left out. They are only adjustable via the monitor control, not the system. They are especially frustrating if you plug the monitor in after you plug in headphones/other speakers, because they'll then take over as the audio out device. I haven't found any way to disable them, either on the monitor or in OSX itself. If I do, I'll be much happier about that.I also have the flickering issue mentioned by another reviewer - it does indeed seem to be an Apple issue of some sort, as it resolves after a restart. I tend to move to and from my desk a lot, so while restarting is quite fast, it becomes very annoying to have to have to boot other environments and restore various connections (I'm a web developer). For now, I am holding out hope that an update will eventually fix it.Finally, I am actually on my second one of these - the USB ports on my first one died after about 5 weeks, right outside of the Amazon return window. I sent it off for an Acer warranty repair, but something happened with the shipping labels and it ended up back at Amazon's warehouse and I got sent a new one as a replacement after a quick email to customer service, which was very kind of them. Who knows how long warranty repair would have taken or what kind of runaround I would have gotten from Acer, so I'm also thankful I got this through Amazon rather than somewhere else.

Forewarning that I don't have that much experience or expertise with monitors besides the crammed research I did over the last week. But I had an Asus MX279H for a few days, which I hear is an amazing monitor with great picture quality from a reliable company, so at least I have a relative point of comparison.

    - Looks amazing; it's almost if not just as good as the Asus after you calibrate the brightness and such.
    - As far as I can see, the screen lighting is consistent throughout and not brighter in any particular spot than another. Nice from all angles.
    - Arrived with no dead pixels or any problems.
    - Good monitor stand that is sturdy enough to not move the screen when moving the tabletop, yet flexible enough to easily move the screen when purposely maneuvered.
    - Matte LCD screen.
    - Very slim with a thin bezel (outer edge part) for those who like that look.
    - Light and compact if you want to travel with it for whatever reason.

If this monitor has all the features you are looking for, then know that it's an amazing choice you should seriously consider with no downsides as far as I can see. I am thoroughly satisfied with it and I love it. But to be safe, make sure your vendor has good return/replacement policies if it turns up with any problems because I can only talk about the single one I got and not about QA consistency.

    ----------

Now I just want to go into detail as to why I chose the features this monitor has in the first place. I wanted 1440p and IPS because I use my computer all the time to play games, so I want something that looks nice; both are probably the best improvements you can get to visual quality. I had a hard time deciding between 1080p and 1440p, but trying 1440p was like putting on a needed pair of glasses if your game supports that resolution, so I don't regret choosing it.

LED-lit (AKA LED, LED-lit LCD) makes colors pop out really well and makes blacks easier to tell apart, so that's a bonus. Trying both 25" and 27", I decided to go with 25" because it still looks large while I'm still able to keep everything in sight by just looking straight. 27" for me felt for the sake of having your screen occupy your peripheral vision.

I decided to be okay with 60Hz for two reasons: one is that I'm not a competitive gamer, and two is that I was limited by my computer. If you don't game competitively, you just want 60Hz for the looks, and it gives smoothness to motion which isn't as important as IPS or 1440p from what I've heard. I was limited in my computer in that if I was going to choose 1440p, which takes a lot out of a GPU, I'm not going to get over 60 frames on newer games like The Witcher 3 at higher settings, which would make over 60Hz useless in that scenario; take the power of your GPU into consideration and get an appropriately matching monitor. Basically, what you want to prioritize is resolution >= game graphic settings > frames for looks.

So taking all that into account along with price, this monitor fulfilled what I wanted.

I don't leave reviews too often, but I feel like reading these reviews is so confusing and might leave you with the question "will this work as a single-cable solution for my ___?" - or at least this is how I felt before I purchased. I took a leap of faith and got a "used" version of this monitor still in the box from Amazon at a greatly reduced price, but I would still say the price they're asking for new is one I would probably still pay (but I probably would have given it 4 stars for value at that point).

I have a 2017 13" MBP (non-touchbar, but it doesn't matter). When I first got this display I was very excited and went to plug it in only to find it powered my laptop and acted as a USB hub but didn't provide any sign of video connection. So odd. I did a bunch of research and it turns out that the included cable is USB-C Gen 1, and the 2017 models need USB-C Gen 2 cables due to increased bandwidth! Additionally, some screens (not mine) need a firmware update. I wrote the seller, who refunded me the cost of a high quality cable (very fair), and promptly ordered this Gen 2 cable:
[USB-IF Certified] Cable Matters USB 3.1 Type-C (10 Gbps) Gen 2 Cable with 4K Video & Power Delivery up to 60W in Black 3.3 Feet / 1m . I plugged it in. WOW.

I have a 28" 4k Dell display at my office that I use a dongle to connect to and then run in a scaled resolution so it's like a "retina" screen. It's a TN display. I thought I was going to miss having scaled graphics with this one but thought "oh it's fine cause it's just my home monitor". This display is amazing. Vastly superior picture and contrast to my 4k at the office. Text is smooth (I'm a developer) and colors look vivid, and color accuracy seems much better than all the other displays I've owned. My brother who is a gamer is impressed by the display as well.

I think the build quality is great. The almost bezel-less design is killer, and I have enough real estate to do just about anything I need. I don't miss the extra few hundred pixels I get with my 4k because the picture just looks so good. The back is white, which I'm not the biggest fan of, but it's up against my wall so I don't care. It doesn't have height adjustment (again if the price was the new price I probably would have put 4 stars) but with the right setup it doesn't matter for me personally. I keep my DAC/Audio Interface and external hard drive plugged in, which is nice because I don't have to remember to back anything up.

There are better screens for one-cable connections to the new 2017 MBPs, but none of them are this affordable. With the right cable, this is a fantastic external monitor for my needs. Hopefully it lasts!

I noticed that all of the reviews that says that this works with a MacBook 12" were from over a year ago. Acer blames Apple / Does not test with Apple, but the bottom line is THIS MONITOR DOES NOT WORK WITH MACBOOK (RETINA, 12-INCH, 2017)

I sent the monitor to Acer to get a firmware upgrade. During the process I was told by
Acer support "Oscar C.: Ok, I understand, actually we do not tests our units with Mac computer."

The monitor looks good - shame it doesn't work.
Apparently it is a firmware issue. Conveniently, Acer does not have customer upgradeable firmware, so the brand new monitor has to be sent to Acer for 10 BUSINESS DAYS while they get around to fixing this.

AVOID THE MONITOR IF YOU HAVE A MAC!

This is a gorgeous display and I can't imagine beating it for the money. I ordered this for my mid-2012 MacBook Air knowing that it wouldn't work out of the box using any of the supplied cables. You need a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. I ordered mine right here on Amazon and the moment I plugged it in everything was stunning in full WQHD (2560x1440) as advertised. This is the cable here: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00V053D4O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The negative reviews about the built in speakers are all true; they completely suck. But, I didn't buy this for the sound; I'm now shopping around for a good set of external speakers. Now that I can see Netflix and YouTube in WQHD I want a sound system to match.

    Contras Personales:

According to many technical reviews, it's the best 27inch display for the new USB-C Macbook Pro. We bought two units. They are great. We love the USB-C connexion which allows for charging and video through the same cable. Our only complaint: We had to update the firmware on both monitors, through a Windows 10 PC. The monitors came with an obsolete USB-C firmware, not compatible with the 2017 MacBook Pro.

Reviewed in Canada on March 10, 2018
I would strongly encourage anyone with a Macbook (2017) not to purchase this monitor. As others have mentioned, my MacBook didn’t work with it. I spent hours with Acer and Apple trying to resolve the problem to no avail. I even had the firmware updated by Acer, but that didn’t help.

The problem I was having was getting it to work with a USB-C cable.

It is unfortunate, as I really liked the design and simplicity of the monitor. I eventually went with a Benq PD2710QC, which worked perfectly right out of the box and had the same functionality of the Acer plus more.
