I just got this in today (Saturday afternoon) after ordering late Thursday night. I did a lot of competitor research – mostly because I was hoping a could find something that had solid reviews, but wasn’t so expensive. $150 for an iPad keyboard is a tough pill to swallow for a lot of people and I understand why. I considered others and thought hard about the Logitech keyboard, but didn’t really want to deal with anything connected via bluetooth. Concerns with other less expensive offerings focused heavily on unresponsive keys and missed keystrokes for those who type fast. There are other keyboards that really add a lot of bulk and weight to the setup and I didn’t want that either. Lastly, I read a lot of reviews for keyboard/cover combos that offered front/back protection, but those always seemed to have issues with the hinge breaking after a few months of use.
Reviews for the iPad Smart Keyboard were mostly solid when it came to connectivity and keystroke responsiveness and to me that was something that had to be good if this was going to be worth the cost.
One common complaint about the Smart Keyboard is that it doesn’t offer any protection for the back of the iPad. This is true. However, you can use the Smart Keyboard in combination with other iPad cases that will give you the back protection you need. Many other cases, such as the one I use, leave the magnetized side of the iPad open for a connection to the Smart Keyboard. I happen to use the Crystal Clear Poetic Lumos Flexible Soft Transparent Ultra-Thin Compact Resistant TPU Case because it has a holder for the Apple Pencil.
So, to recap...
I’m using the Smart Keyboard, which is functioning beautifully. It’s actually easier to type on this than it is on my 2016 MacBook Pro 13. The keystrokes are responsive and I’m able to type as fast as I can with any other traditional computer.
The Smart Keyboard works with the case I was already using, which also has a holder for the Apple Pencil. So, I’ve got the protection I need for the back of the iPad, the pencil won’t get lost and I have the absolute best option out there for an iPad keyboard.
I’m including multiple photos to show you all how well this setup works. If you want to get the same case to go with the keyboard, I previously used the exact item description so you can all search easily.
I have a hard time believing anyone would be disappointed with this keyboard if it’s set up the way I’ve just described.
Good luck and happy typing!

Good luck and happy typing!
For a keyboard, it's quite light and slim (smart connect means no battery, no bluetooth). It connected magnetically to the iPad and fits perfectly. The size of the keyboard and the typing experience are very good for me. I have fairly large hands, type fast, and hit the keys *very* hard (a MacBook Pro keyboard typically lasts less than 2 years with me), and I've been able to type comfortably on this keyboard.
Having the keyboard has significantly increased my productivity (no surprise, right), and having it as a slim, light cover attached to the iPad makes it very convenient to carry.
One thing you might find a bit negative is that the back is not covered by the keyboard. I also bought a KHOMO iPad Air Gen 3 Charcoal Gray case for the back, and it matches perfectly, makes it look like I've got a full case.
I couldn't be more pleased with the keyboard, highly recommend it.
These keys are bizarre. They are chiclet-style raised keys, with an absolutely fantastic texture that can’t be compared. I guess maybe rubberized micro-corduroy? The F and J keys have the standard blind typing bump, and everything is kind of tight as you might expect on such a small form factor. The typing experience is a joy, even with giant meat mitts like mine! The sound and action of the keys is quiet and firm, so I can type for a good long while on this thing without driving people in the room nuts or bothering my hands.
The compact nature of the keys takes a little getting used to, as there is little space for function and symbol keys. There is a very handy emoji key in the bottom right for use with Apple emojis and downloaded sticker sets. The arrow keys are tiny, in the bottom right. If you use a magic keyboard, the layout will be familiar. The battery drain this device causes is not noticeable. It magnetically attaches to the side of the iPad, and works with most single-side cases on the market (check out the section on “Bought with this item” and choose the one you like. It really doesn’t matter what the material is unless you have kids or are planning on putting the iPad through an obstacle course and need tough armor.
As you might guess, the keyboard folds into itself, presenting a synthetic suede face toward the screen. It acts as a thick, protective cover and magnetically sleeps the device display. The cover it creates is a little chunky and not perfectly symmetrical, but closes precisely and doesn’t allow too much crud under it. Having a screen protector would give you 100% security, but I never worry about modern devices.
Why did I buy this? Simple. It makes the iPad into a computer replacement. You can quickly and easily type with office software, Discord, social media, e-mail, etc. My iPad sit so n the coffee table, ready for gaming or conversing at a moment’s notice. The angle is great for viewing, and is magnetically secured to make sure your iPad doesn’t slip flat as you pound on the keys.
Oh, and you don’t have to connect anything. Like all Apple products, the iPad knows the keyboard has been attached, and behaves like it was made to work with it, which it was. That’s a big plus. No goofing with Bluetooth settings or worrying about disconnecting mid-sentence.
So, don’t play around with 3rd party stuff. Grab a genuine Apple keyboard for your little tablet and turn it into a mobile battlestation you can be proud of!
