The game might be a little overwhelming at first, but I'd suggest checking out tutorials on youtube of the game, that is what I did when I had trouble. Other than that, have fun conquering China in the ROTK14!
One last thing, make sure you buy the right game for your region! Or the the DLC won't work, I accidentally did that with my first purchase!
For old fans of the series, this newest entry, to put it kindly, is a dumbed down version of ROTK11. There is only Ruler mode. For those players that loved the RPG dynamic of 13 and earlier entries you will have to look elsewhere sadly. For this ruler mode only entry, gameplay has been dumbed down to basically the barebones in a grand tactical game.
The resource and city building management aspect of the game is extremely passive and limited. The player assigns his vassals to develop either commerce, agriculture, or barracks and that’s about it. The player can also make appointments for someone to be in charge of recruiting new troops and to be in charge of training. The end. There are other minor things you can do on a force level but it’s sorely lacking in diversity.
While the AI in ROTK games has never been the best and usually easily exploited, at least there was some semblance of player controlled combat. All the action this time around takes place on the large map of China, including battles. Except now as part of the gameplay each turn for city commands/ marching command has an a tactical phase and then an active phase. Once you give your troops their marching orders and enter the active phase the computer controls the rest. You do not get to control your units or even really be able to best position them in battle. It’s beyond frustrating to say the least. Your characters abilities pop at random, even if at later rank promotions you can input which abilities should fire off first. It is such a giant step back for the series I am still in shock plainly.
The worst thing though is the hexagonal map structure itself. The map of China is broken up into hex tiles which are further broken down into cities and then the surrounding areas which the game calls “cores”. Taking control of the “cores” around your city gives you the biggest bonuses. Somewhat similar to the mechanics in 13. However, with the hex system your units have to basically do a paint-by-numbers dance across the map to fill in every hex for max benefit. Again, you the player do not control this, you are more or less at the mercy of the AI which picks the most nonsensical routes. There is an option that when a “core” has an overseer appointed a small amount of hexes are filled in each turn, but that in part takes forever.
Another big gripe, at least for me, is the elimination of the debate system from games past. The dueling system while still present has zero command or input from the player.
Finally, in a rather bizarre design choice the player him or herself has to physically chose the option to have historical events go off. If you fail to pay attention during this historical time period it happened, then you missed it.
If you are a new player to the series good luck actually trying to understand the gameplay from the get go. The tutorial is short and doesn’t cover anything other than a few main functions. It basically even tells you at one point that you’ll figure it out as you go along. To be fair however the game does have an extensive help guide and online website which does clear things up but This just points further to the conclusion that it is not a finished product.
If you are a Total War: Three Kingdoms fan coming over to this series to give it a shot, please do yourself a favor and don’t begin with this one. In my humble opinion, it is sadly the worst one in the series. The game most similar to what the developer was trying to do here is ROTK11 which is a great game. If you want something more new looking and has pretty good RPG play elements to it try 13. This game however is nowhere near ready or on par with even the weaker entries in the ROTK series.
Not all hope is lost though. Koei usually releases a power up kit for these games that really enhances gameplay and makes it a lot better. That would be coming down the road for a long time though. At this point in time I would have to give this game a hard pass. It really tears me up that I have to, as lifelong fan, but the quality just isn’t there at this point in time. It’s a pass For me in my opinion.
Been a fan of Sangokushi series for a long time but this has been a disapointment.
Seems like a fast and rushed development without much editing nor oversight.
