Here's what we need to clear off the plate before we get started. This is a $200 speaker designed to be portable, and should be treated as such. There are critical reviews in here that are pegging this speaker next to sound systems that do not even serve the same purpose as the Bose SoundLink Mini II. I have a few other systems to serve other purposes in my life: a Bower & Wilkins + McIntosh stereo system, KRK Rokit Monitors, just to name the two most enjoyed setups I have.
But here's the thing. I needed something portable. Sleek. Reliable. Something I could carry around my apartment from my bedroom to my kitchen to my bathroom. And that same speaker needed to have the ability to be thrown into my backpack when I go to my girlfriend's house or off to a friend's place for the weekend. I looked at other speakers, such as the Beats Pill and UE Boom. Which did I like best? The Bose SoundLink Mini II. I'm not a Bose fan, it's just not in my pedigree. I had a few products from Bose in the past and simply wasn't impressed by the hype (Bose 3-2-1, the original noise cancelling headphones, Bose 802 Series II PA/DJ speakers).
The SoundLink Mini II has since removed my brand bias. It's simply amazing. And to make a long story short, I love it. My roommate had the previous generation SoundLink Mini and I enjoyed connecting my iPhone to it when we had social gatherings in our old loft apartment. Back then it filled the living room with more than enough sound with 10 people in the room to converse over. I have since moved to a smaller apartment, but needed something I could listen to in all rooms of my current living space- something I could not do with my KRK Rokit 5 setup which I would connect to via AirPlay.
This little speaker provides great sound, albeit a bit too bassy for my taste. Solution: I set the Spotify EQ to "Bass Reduction" and the output is just where I want it to be. I listen to all genres of music, but 70% of the time focus my attention on electronic, Top40, and Hip Hop, and this speaker does just the thing for me. The added convenience of a Micro USB charging port as well as dual bluetooth connection makes using this speaker so much easier than the last version. Happy to see Bose listened to the critics before releasing their second revision of the speaker.
I have had this speaker for a mere 4 days and am very happy with it. I purchased the OEM Bose rubber bumper case for it, as well as a third party soft case, and now I'm ready to bring this where ever I need to go. It's the perfect tool for a city dweller on the run like myself, but this is easily at home on any kitchen countertop or office desk.
Don't hesitate to purchase this- the other speakers in its class (key point when comparing this speaker) simply cannot compete with the Bose. Sure, you can buy the cheaper UE Boom 2, but it's also cheaper in build quality and aesthetics. Leave the UE Boom for college freshman. For those of us who have matured a bit and enjoy both elegant design language and good sound quality out of such a small, portable unit, go for the Bose. You absolutely will not regret it! Happy listening, Eric.
Pros:
--Most importantly, the sound quality is excellent. Nice, strong bass and mid-range sound will fill a room with your choice of music and provide an outstanding music experience.
--Very easy connectivity. Turn on the speaker, turn on the Bluetooth on your phone, and select the device and you're ready to go. Also there is a voice prompt that will walk you through the process. Which brings me to the next pro:
--The voice prompts don't only walk you through the connecting process, they also tell you the level of the battery, as well as tell you who's calling if you happen to get a phone call while listening to music.
--Small, durable design makes this speaker very easy to move around the house or take on the go. Small speaker... Huge sound!!
--The charging dock is great. No need to fumble it around looking for the usb port to plug it in. Just drop it on the charging dock and let it charge up.
Cons:
So far I don't have any cons that I've come up with but I will leave some that I found during my week of video and Amazon reviews (just for laughs):
--No bright colors available. Just boring black and gray. Seeing how I'm a 33 year old man, I'm just fine with black or gray.
--No "cute little dude holder stands" like the Beats Pill has. C'mon Bose...get it together. Beats has got one up on you in the Lets Make My Speaker a Toy area!
Overall, the Bose SoundLink Mini exceeds in the most important area when looking to buy a speaker. I cannot stress enough how great this speaker sounds. This is my first Bose product and I can already guarantee that it will not be my last. (I've already been looking at headphones!) Go ahead and try it. I highly doubt you will be disappointed!
Top reviews from other countries
I wasn't after something that would fill the neighbor hood with sound and scare all the cats and wildlife within a 3 block radius (I have other equipment that can do that). I wanted something that I could use on the deck, or indoors, when we have friends over or in my studio when I'm working and that had superb sound. The Mini II meets my needs.
PROS
1) Superb build quality as the unit weights almost 2 pounds (800 grams)
2) visually appealing appearance (although most people can't figure out where the big sound is coming from)
3) small footprint (easy to put on a book shelf)
4) superb sound quality (Bose is known for this) including reasonably good bass performance
5) easy to set up
6) charge using the charging base or anything with a USB port including your PC, LapTop, or car plug
7) link to multiple sources plus the linking process literally takes less then 10 seconds
CONS
1) in the house I found that 3 walls can defeat the signal although that is correctable as it is a portable speaker (outside you are probably looking at 20 metres (60 feet) plus or more depending on the strength of the source
I don't find anything missing from buying the Mini II versus the slightly larger Soundlink
As a bonus at $219CAN it beats the USA price of $260CAN ($199USA plus 30% exchange)
HIGHLY Recommended
the sound quality is especially impressive for its size. not only am i constantly impressed (even 2-3 years later). but whenever someone hears it they always mention how good it sounds especially at replicating bass! it definitely has that Bose bass boost that im notin love with ingeneral but i think they nailed on this product!
i charge it like once a week if that and i have used it LITERALLY every day since buying it (not including being out of town on the off chance i don't pack it with me). and charging is super easy with the dock that comes in the box!
its a bit heavier than some speakers making it extra weight in a bag, however, i haven't found it overboard personally. and when youre not using it camping or something it feels very premium due to its metal exterior and the added weight
