About Us

In 1971, 23-year-old blues fan Bruce Iglauer spent his meager savings to record and release a record by his favorite Chicago blues band, Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers. The new album needed a record label, so he created Alligator Records to release one LP. Today, Alligator boasts a catalog of over 350 titles, many of which are renowned, classics of the genre. Career-defining albums from legendary artists like Hound Dog Taylor, Koko Taylor, Son Seals, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Professor Longhair, Lonnie Brooks, Luther Allison and Michael “Iron Man” Burks share the catalog with releases from current blues and roots icons Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Guitar Shorty, Billy Boy Arnold and Mavis Staples.

Editorial Reviews

The Big Fun Trio (Elvin on guitar and vocals, Willy Jordan on cajon and vocals, and Bob Welsh on guitar and piano) forges a new blues and R&B sensibility, colored by the distinctive, stripped-down instrumentation and shot through with Elvin’s exuberant, down home vibe.  Seven Bishop originals, plus Lightnin’ Hopkin’s Honey Babe, Fats Domino’s Let The Four Winds Blow, Sunnyland Slim’s It’s You, Baby, and Bobby Womack’s It’s All Over Now.  Charlie Musselwhite, Rick Estrin and Kim Wilson guest.  "Fabulous good-time romps...the pleasure is infectious"—Blues & Rhythm

One of our greatest pickers still making some serious music while having a great time. Elvin Bishop along with fellow guitarist Michael Bloomfield, as members of only one of Paul Butterfield's phenomenal bands set the stage for the white, blues guitarists of the '60s and was instrumental in influencing the whole psychedelic, west coast music sound as evidenced on their classic recording "East/West." It's satisfying to have Pigboy Crabshaw still playing the tasty notes that he's always been known for. Buy this and all of Big Fun Trio's recordings, you won't be sorry if you're a blues fan.

I was always a follower and admirer of Elvin back to the early Butterfield Band and particulary on the Resurrection of Pig Boy LP. Followed him less as a solo but "rediscovered" him again in the last ten years or so. Elvin is good fun, bluesy and soulful. This outing is really good for its "live" sound a trio format. These three guys( and Charlie Musselwhite on a cut) are having a good time and so am I . Please keep recording more.

The title, "Big Fun Trio", is probably a deliberate take off on Willie Dixon's "Big Three Trio". Elvin, Willie and Bob provide some REALLY fun and solid listening pleasure. I always enjoy Elvin Bishop's fun lyrics and strong 1, 4, 5 beat. Most songs are originals, but, the Trio does a commendable job on Roy Brown's "Let The Four Winds Blow." Yuppers, this is a 5 Star CD.

Elvin never fails to put a smile on your face and a little giddy-up in your step. Stripped down fun at its best!

I've been an Elvin Bishop fan for many years, and I get that there is no retirement for Bluesmen, so making some money later in life is probably a necessity. The thing about this album is that it seems and sounds like a hastily-thrown-together profit-making venture to capitalize on the former glory days of this iconic Bluesman. There's not much Big or Fun about this album—just a pedestrian offering of songs that are riffs of earlier work, resulting on a collection of music that is borderline obnoxious and borderline sad. Sorry, but I just can't recommend this unless you are shopping for something that you'll be wanting to add to your box of musical cast-offs at your next garage sale.

I love Elvin Bishop. This is a really raw bar band kind of sound. Would be great to hear live in a bar but loses something in recording. I would suggest listening to a cut before buying

ce n'est pas que je n'aime pas, mais pour avoir vu Elvin Bishop sur scène en 1972 (eh oui !), ce CD n'apporte pas grand chose de nouveau
