I actually ended up directly comparing the Zenwatch 3 to the Huawei Watch 2 Classic, and the Zenwatch 3 won by far. I am actually very disappointed in the Huawei Watch 2 Classic just comparing it to the Zenwatch 2, but the Zenwatch 3 is even better than that. I'm surprised because on paper the Huawei Watch 2 Classic should've been the better watch with a heartbeat sensor, GPS (doesn't rely on the phone's GPS), better water resistance, etc. In the end none of those features mattered, because the Zenwatch 3 is an overall much better watch.
What I liked about the Zenwatch 3 over the Huawei Watch 2 Classic is the whole Asus experience. Asus simply makes a better overall smartwatch experience with their Asustek apps, and these were missing from the Huawei experience. The Huawei Watch 2 Classic was just very vanilla and boring and lacking in software based features. For example, there's no sleep monitoring function because Google Fit doesn't have that function, whereas Asus ZenFit does have this function (which seems kind of silly since the Huawei Watch 2 Classic has a heartbeat monitor which would be great for tracking sleep). I also really like the Zenwatch Manager app, whereas the Huawei Watch 2 Classic completely depended on the Android Wear app for manager all the features (which the Zenwatch 2 and 3 also use, but Zenwatch Manager allows for even more customization). The Zenwatch 3 also has a much bigger screen and it also looks a lot more dressy and expensive. About the only thing that I liked more about the Huawei Watch 2 Classic over the Zenwatch 3 was the standard size band, but that was completely negated when I found the metal mesh band for the Zenwatch 3, because I would buy and use the same band for the Huawei Watch 2 Classic because I really like that band.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, though, and apparently it's been formally announced that Asus is getting out of the smartwatch arena. I'm tempted to take a star away from this review because of this, but I won't because it doesn't change the fact that this is still an excellent watch. But I do think it's a shame that they are doing this because this also means that that they aren't going to be providing future OS upgrades for this watch. Now, all that being said, I don't really have a problem with that currently, as I think that Oreo is relatively a useless upgrade for a phone, but especially for a watch. I'm just glad they upgraded the watch to Wear 2.0 and Nougat, because I think those were two very important upgrades for the smartwatch platform. However, I can definitely see how this could start to limit this watch like a year or two from now. That's not a ridiculous concern as some might think, because this isn't a phone, it's a watch, and watch (even a smartwatch) should have a longer usable life than just a year or two. I'm hoping that Asus reconsiders sometime in the near future and puts out a Zenwatch 4. Until such time (if ever) I don't really know what I'm going to do after the Zenwatch 3. I may end up just going back to a dumbwatch, as I'm really unimpressed with the other Android Wear smartwatch offerings.
So, in summary, I love the watch, it's by far my favorite smartwatch (with the Zenwatch 2 being a close second), but I am disappointed about the (apparent lack of) future for the Zenwatch line. I would recommend getting one while you still can!
Pro - I like the size of this watch. It is the exact same size as my previous old-school fossil watch.
Pro - I like the looks of it. I was initially uncertain about the copper circle. I ended up buying an aftermarket brown leather band that I think goes very good with it. I have received quite a few compliments.
Pro - The Outlook watch face is useful if you have plenty of calls/texts/emails/meetings throughout the day.
Neutral - The battery lasts longer on this watch than the average Android Wear watch that has come out through 2017. But this is partially due to no heart rate monitor, and I do wish the battery lasted longer still. However it is functional the way it is throughout the day.
Neutral - The main button quit working after two months (see below). But Asus did stand by the warranty; they fixed it. It works like new again.
Con - I wish the OS was faster. But I don't think any other Android Wear watch through 2017 has been better.
Con - I wish it had a heart rate monitor.
Original Review:
It is not even two months since I bought it, and the main button just quit working... I can't access the apps or Google Assistant anymore. I'm going to look into the warranty now. I hope there is a warranty, having bought this on Amazon...
The look and feel of the watch definitely seem high quality. I'm a big guy with large hands; the watch looks appropriately sized on me. It may feel/look uncomfortably large on a smaller person.
What attracted me most to this watch were other reviews about its battery life. I knew it would require daily charging, but the only way I can get the watch to make it beyond the 24-hour mark is by leaving it on Eco mode most of the time. At night, while wearing it to bed (it tracks sleep effeciency) I leave it in eco mode and also activitate threater mode (which turns off the display screen). Defaulting to eco mode is generaly not an issue, especially at work when my phone sits right next to me on my desk anyway. And the watch reconnects to the phone real quickly when I turn off eco mode (like if I'm going into a meeting and want to be able to discretely see phone notifications). I also leave "always on" disabled. And I disabled the one-handed gestures option. I like the concept of operating the watch by making gestures with just my left arm (the arm I wear the watch on), but I never could get it to work right without looking like a bird with a crippled wing. And when I wasn't trying to make watch gestures (like when changing my son's diaper) the watch navigated deep into app menus. So... no gestures, "always on" disabled, eco mode most of the time... I can easily wear it for 24-hours straight and still have 20% battery remaining.
Charging is super quick. I snap on the magnetic charger while eating breakfast and getting my briefcase loaded for work. It really does only take about 15-30 minutes to charge. Even when I've run it completely dead it only took about 45 minutes to charge all the way back up. Sometimes it goes straight into rapid charging, sometimes regular charging. I haven't figured out how it knows when to charge at which speed, but it always seems to charge quickly.
Ultimately, this is a completely unnecessary extension of a smartphone (I currently use the LG V10), but is still a pretty cool piece of technology. And I love that it looks like a regular watch, allowing me to discretely and fashionably have access to a simple activity tracker and phone notifications on my wrist.
UPDATE
I discovered the "tilt to wake" feature was guilty of draining the battery. The watch was waking up many times throughout the day, triggered by things like driving or typing. Once I disabled this feature, battery life immediately and dramatically improved. Now I even have "always on" enabled and can still easily reach the 24-hour mark!
