Maps now have their own quirks, one has water that's tainted with poison that upon entering will poison a character, another map has mushrooms that spawn that when thrown have a area of effect that alters your characters.
Character leveling is also streamlined, you can hire new characters and pay (in game) money to not only choose how good they are but you can also buy levels! You can also really choose how a character grows with Evilties which can buff stats or give bonus abilities to characters, if that isn't enough? You can choose how to level certain moves by buying enhancements.
Right, you hire characters and there's a lot of classes, more since the last game I played (I played D1,2,3,D2 and D5:Complete).
This sounds like a lot if you're new to RPGs, but the game is very simple if you stick to just story mode and the game does a good job at introducing you to mechanics. But if you want deep....well you can level characters to 9,999, eventually do millions or billions worth of damage per hit, throw exploding penguins (dood) or go into an item and battle through hundreds of floors as they get more and more difficult and the item gets more and more strong.
Why this version is the best one to get:
The game comes with all the DLC of the PS4 version and possibly more (I can't say for sure with this I haven't played the PS4 version). If you are looking to play this game though the DLC isn't the only reason to get this one. Disgaea is a game made to be played portable, I had the most fun with the games on PSP and it's the same on the Switch. Battles can take a while, especially in item world so standby mode works great in allowing you to drop in and out of the game as you please and with it portable you can play it in bed or whatever. It makes the game easier to push through if you're trying to dive deeper into the game.
If you have the PS4 version already and you played that a lot, this doesn't have enough extra to warrant you buying again. But if you didn't get too far and you'd like to see more of the game ...I say disgaea portable is the only way to do it.
How it runs:
It runs really well on the swtich, the only issue I've seen is some slowdown when I passed a bill at the senate that filled the hub world with probably 100+ characters. It wasn't constant and it only cropped up for a bit. Otherwise it runs great in portable or docked mode and is solid.
If you're new to the series, I don't think you're missing much by starting here. Disgaea 1 is a fine game with a good story but has many flawed mechanics that make the game harder to play, 2 refined it, 3 tripped and D2 and now 5 pulled it back and made the series great.
I won't go too much in the story since this is the fifth game in the series, however if you are one that's on the fence about whether or not that the series is for you then I'll answer that. If you are into Fire Emblem or any sort of Japanese RPG games then I would recommend this one as well. If you're looking for a game that you want to put in a lot of hours to then I would recommend this one as well because this one has many hours and endless scenarios that you can engage yourself in in this game. Plus the best part is you can take it anywhere, go anywhere, play it anywhere on the Nintendo switch. Now answer the other question is if you need to have play the other games to understand this one. The answer is no. So you can engage yourself into playing this game and I believe this is a prequel. So that's a good start for you in the series. And if you haven't played the one on PS4 then again I would recommend this one as well. But just in case you're wondering about the storyline it's pretty simplistic. It's basically about the main character who teams up with another character in the series so I won't mention any names who try to take down the antagonist of the series called Lord dark.
This game is also single player so don't expect any Secret of Mana or Co op as this is only available in single player mode. This a strategy RPG game. Might be stating the obvious but I figured I will least let you know. This game also support Pro Controller the joy Con's as well so keep that in mind. From when I played of it also that my only gripe about this is that there is no Auto Battle which I loved in the Fire Emblem series were basically if I wanted to grind my characters to level them up faster I would just put them in Auto and they can fight while I did something else so to me that is the downside to this game.
Keep in mind I will not recommend this for kids as this is for teens so bear that in mind. There are some suggestive images in there but nothing too have to cover your eyes with or mature rated features. But in all it's a very fun game. It has some fun characters. A very anime vibe to it so if you're into anime then that's a plus for you. There's also a lot of humorous scenarios in here which I can't help but laugh when it comes to this series.

This is so rich in content. You can solicit the game's senate to change game rules, open features, or just drown your life's frustrations in a writhing tidal wave of adorable Prinnies, dood! You can hire and fire PCs at will, allowing you many accessible in-roads to the fathoms-deep classes structure. Every battle is a fun and healthy challenge and many of the mechanics interlace well in the fabric of the whole experience.
The soundtrack is fantastic, the graphics are sharp and detailed, the writing is devilishly comical and delightfully irreverent at times, and it's just plain FUN. Moreover, it's THE perfect Switch game IMO. It plays great on the big screen with a Pro controller, but I lose no amount of the thrill from playing it handheld propped up in bed or on my lunch break at work. The sometimes long battles and vast numbers of windows and menus to "tiwddle" with make it great for pick-up-for-5-minutes-at-a-time play (thanks, Sleep Mode) or a long night of slaughter. Plus, like many tactical RPGs, it's admittedly not as much fun for some to watch as play, so I'm avoiding every potential "I hate watching this game" argument in the evenings -- I pick up the Switch and go to my chair, leaving the TV free for what everyone else wants to watch.

Edit: Looks like they finally fixed the item world problem and can go into sleep mode while in it without the game crashing. 5 Stars!
