Don't buy it!

Don't buy it!
NEVER BUY A NEATO! I'll try to explain why by telling my story. It's gonna be somewhat long. If you don't have time to read it then try to believe me aswell as any other person giving this item two or less stars: go buy something else! Or be prepared for replacements and then repairs – all leaving youthe need to waste time on vacuuming for weeks. One thing is really good about it: the cleaning. This is what it does really good. Especially if you're a happy owner of three cats. But that's the only 'pros' about this robot. This is the only reason I give it two stars. Here come 'cons'. Many of them. Way too many. The least important one but often pretty annoying is the way it handles WiFi. It disconnects no matter what kind of problem is there: would it be your access point rebooting, or your providerservice outage occurred. Not only it disconnects but never tries to restore the connection again! It's not a big deal most of the time. But imagine you forget to start it, leavethe home and then realize that – oops! – you cannot do it remotely. Here is how one of the most valued new features becomes completely useless leaves you wondering: "What did I pay for?"Now comes the big problem. It breaks. Or, more precisely: it breaks constantly. I had four of them over the period of one and a half year. All four broke. None survived past6 months. And as long as it gets out of warranty period – nobody cares about you anymore. You're on your own. So, be prepared to repair or pay for it. Ans so, here is the story:The robot #1This one was bought on Amazon. Smart, fast, clean – especially comparing to our previously owned iRobot Roomba 880 which never managed to clean the whole house due to its complexplan. Neato was really superior to that dinosaur in a way it scanned the surroundings, built up a map and cleaned every single corner it was able to reach. I was happy... fortwo months. Then strange things started happening, the thing was complaining about losing it's way right in a middle of a room with no visible reason for the failure. I still haveno idea what it was but the laser sensor is the usual suspect here.By that time Neato support was very helpful, we quickly came to a conclusion, that replacement is needed. So, they sent me a new one and upon receiving it I sent back the broken. The robot #2Five months. It lasted exactly five months. I know this by email dating back to that times. This time it was a problem with robo's "brains" as it was shutting down or rebootingunpredictably at random moments. Actually, charging was a cause for shutdown with almost 100% probability.Support? Well, this time you'd have to send the broken robot to them at your own cost. They examine it and evaluate the case. Then send you areplacement. Overall the process is estimated to take about 3 weeks. As a matter of fact – it took 4 damn weeks! A month to the day! BTW, it's amonth down from the warranty period and nobody gonna compensate you that!Still wonder why a customer should pay for vendor's faults but that's their policy and one agrees to it upon buying the product. But that was thefirst time I decided that as soon as the time of buying a new robot comes I'll go for anything else but Neato's thing. The robot #3Another five months. Actually, four and a half. Side brush died. The old known procedure of support: test/discuss/send back. But this time there was a new surprise from them:they've sent me a replacement side brush to test! Can you imagine this: the robot doesn't spin it, there is no visually observable breakages, the brush is sitting on a six-sidedspindle tightly... I mean that with all the photos I've sent to them, all test result the only possible conclusion here: something is wrong with robot's mechanics. But theysend me a new brush...Ok, it still manages to clean the house and so far I'm ok with it. Just wait for another week until the new brush arrives, make a video of stuck side brush – and another replacementis on the way. This time it was amazingly fast: only two weeks of manual vacuuming. The robot #4Here comes the end of the story. In another – guess how many? – five months the main brush dies. The robot complains about it ("clean up my brush") but there is nothing I can do.The brush just doesn't rotate. It's even a problem to take it out of it's place because it really stuck. Now, what about support? Oh, sorry, you're out of your warranty! Replacements are covered for only 90 days. We gonna tell you where you can repair it.What? Really, are you serious, guys? Let me recall the other reason I choose Neato in favor of iRobot (the first one was a cNet shiny review): it was $200 cheaper! Now, with the twoprevious shipments of returns almost half of the difference is already gone. Now it looks like buying iRobot would even be cheaper after all – because they don't break fasterthan rabbits reproduce! As it seems, to be a happy owner of Neato robot means to either send it out regularly for repair; or repair yourself. I choose the latter. What is a wasted day compares to weeksof time wasted on vacuuming? I was lucky this time. The problem happened to be a non-fatal one. But it has also shown to me how big was the mistake of choosing this vendor.Because they spare thoughtlessly on materials used. I was suspecting this when the side brush broke, but this time it was absolutely clear because a good plastic would nevermelt and interfuse where a gearwheel sits on it's axle. See the photos attached.Luckily, the fix was simple this time. But if the next time things will turn to the worse I won't bother myself sending it out for another repair. I'll go buy something morereliable and, hopefully, backed with better and more responsible support. So, I repeat once again: go buy something else. Don't waste your hard-earned money on a piece of absolutely unreliable hardware! Yes, it does its job good. Sometimes even betterthan others. But the problems coming along with it void the value of this quality totally. Now, as you're warned – go!

I've had my botvac connected for a couple months now and I am loving it! It works great. I have a Labrador and it's shedding of hair was a big big issue. Now I have my neato set to daily at 0900. It wakes up, vacuums the entire house, returns to it's charger and later on that day I empty the trash out of it. It's almost always basically full of dirt and mostly hair. I clean the brush every few days, it's easy to take apart and clean, takes about 3 minutes. My house is hardwood floors, and some linoleum, no carpet. I have some rugs, it handles them well. It will vacuum up small dog toys and start beeping for you to remove it (also sends a push notifications to your phone), so it really forces you to keep things picked up, lol, that's a good thing.
I will say one negative, that's the the little side spinning brush. It isn't made that well or at least the one that came with it wasn't. the bristles basically fell out of one of the three bundles and now i'm about to order a replacement. Maybe it was just that one, we will see. It also falls off every now and then, it's held in place by an magnet, but it's not often and it's no big deal. I'll keep this thing and buy a new one if it ever breaks. It's worth every dollar spent on it.

UPDATE: 1 yr later: 8/2017
This product is awesome. It continues to work like a beast, I've had it set for nearly every day and it keeps on going. Even the battery is still going strong. I mentioned last year that the little side brush was a little cruddy and falls off. Turns out it was just that one as far as the bristles falling out, the next one I got held up fine. The reality is the robot gets in the corners and edges so well it really doesn't need the side brush. I want to give NeatoRobotics lots of props: I had 4 days left on my factory warranty. My jet bathtub sprung a major leak and as life goes, my Neato rolls right into the standing water before I notice the leak. It made it about 4 ft. of sucking up massive amounts of water b4 it shorted out. Note that It has accidentally vacuumed up small spills of water several times with no issues. However this was a lot of water. My Bad. Well guess what, Neato sent me a brand new one without hesitation. I'd say that's awesome! Clearly my fault and no normal warranty covers water damage. I'm certain this one didn't either but they really came through for me on that. I think the robots should be very water resistant and that's something all brands should work on. Just because they are autonomous and very expensive. But again This was a lot of water, lol. So my robot is so priceless I went and bought a new one right away and then they sent me a replacement so now I have two!! :)
If they are anything like my first one they will last for years. Mine was still in great shape after daily use for a year, If it wasn't for the water I feel like mine would have last forever. You cannot go wrong buying this brand bot. I have the Connected version.
Update 1/22/18: so my 2nd Neto Connect is about 6 mo. Old. It looks like the battery is acting up, not fully charging. Neato support is such a good experience. They are prepared to send me a new battery right away and “if that doesn’t work let us know and we will just send you a new one”. That’s been my experence every time I’ve had to deal with them. Excellent!!!

Let me preface this review by saying we loved our Neato Botvac. We wish we could give him five stars for doing a great job of vacuuming, but have to give him one star because of his dramatic and tragic demise, and the difficulty in dealing with his manufacturer on his warrantied return.
Our little Neato was a greatly anticipated addition to our family, and we welcomed him with excitement and open arms in January of 2016. As promised by his creators, he diligently worked each day to vacuum a large home with a lot of dog hair, mountain pine pollen dust, and day to day crumbs and debris. Working for two to three hours at a time, he would move around, creating a gentle hum as he vacuumed our great room with ease; navigating under chairs, over rugs, and around the two Labrador Retrievers. He occasionally would get hung up on a floor vent, and he would call for us with a gentle beep-beep, or if we were out of earshot, a polite on-line prompt. He also would let us know when it was time to empty his dustbin. He picked up a surprising amount of dirt for such a compact machine, and we gloated with pride over our efficient and effective Neato. As time went on, he began to get more comfortable with us--increasingly brave and more adventurous as he traveled through his daily cleaning journey. This pioneering spirt was greatly appreciated, as Neato began ambling further afield, cleaning long hallways, finding new rooms and vacuuming adventures with every turn. We laughed and took pictures like proud, amused parents when Neato, by his own volition, ventured outside--and in the process, vacuumed our deck with a dogged determination and what seemed like a renewed sense of purpose. Of course, we gently chided him and brought him back inside, reminding him he was an indoor vacuum, unlike his distant and ungainly cousin, the Shop-Vac. As time went on, his roaming adventures continued, and as his arc of travel grew wider, we would occasionally lose our fair haired boy. A distant beep would summon us from across the house, and we would search in a frantic panic as his incessant beeping that sounded like a sad bleat from a lost lamb calling for his mother echoed in our ears. In hindsight, we realize that was the turning point. Now we lie awake at night with tears in our eyes and guilty regret in our hearts. We look at each other, with words unspoken yet understood--we should have known that our Neato was crying for help. That his roaming far afield was a sign of a more deeply rooted problem. That vacuuming the deck wasn't funny, it was a call for attention. That he wasn't happy with us at all. That he wanted to find a way out. And find a way out was just what our dear Neato did. In a final act of lonely desperation, Neato hurled himself down a landing in a Kamikaze death spiral, plummeting over two flights of stairs, exploding into tiny bits and pieces that were a shadow of his former, vibrant self. His lights flickered on and off as my husband raced to the lower level, finding him in a heap of parts on the floor. A few long, distorted and pained beeps were the last words he spoke.
Now some may say our Neato was only a robot with no heart and no soul. That he simply malfunctioned, wandered off track and lost his way, not knowing that the landing was dangerous and a place to be avoided. We prefer to believe that he longed for more, and felt trapped like a caged animal in the monotony of his day to day life as a small appliance. That like winged Icarus, if he could get closer to the sun, he would find true happiness and peace. We want to believe he realized he was meant for greater things--not just a lowly wi-fi enabled robot meant to vacuum up dog hair and yesterday's crumbs, but a free and noble creature--meant for the sky, not the floor.
And so we say goodbye to our brave and fearless Neato. You were loved. You are being replaced by the Neato Corporation, ℅ the Funai Service Corporation, who are making me pay shipping for your return, and who have not been easy to deal with when it comes to fixing a problem for a product that is still under warranty--requiring multiple submissions of the same pictures, invoices and statements. We can only hope that your replacement is as diligent as you have been, but a lot less adventurous. We have learned our lesson and will keep New Neato restricted to a smaller area- no taste of the road, no adventure, no outdoor journeys. A simpler life, but a safe one.
Good luck little friend! We will miss you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kamikaze Neato, meant for greater things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good vacuum cleaner
Reviewed in Canada on May 24, 2017
Good vacuum cleaner. Even with occasional cleaning after his work is fairly clean.

I can say - the thing is definitely cool !!!!
- unmistakably arranges a flat-plan apartment
-it is very cool to clean dirt and dust
-cleans the corners
- thanks to sensors, it recognizes furniture and other obstacles well
-when driving to the carpet, includes turbo mode
- easy to maintain
-minimum consumables (about half a year replace the HEPA filter)
-CLEANS YOURSELF !!
You just need to prepare an apartment - remove all the cords, I also hide all the shoes, I put the kitchen chairs on the table.

Buying this vacuum cleaner, I thought that I would still need a regular vacuum cleaner. But it turned out that there is practically no need to walk through the apartment with an ordinary vacuum cleaner.

There are several disadvantages, but they do not have much importance, because Cleaning robot is good and saves time.

Minuses:
- hitting on some objects (the base of the lamp) or a pop-up approach may jam the navigation of the current cleaning.
- rooms must be prepared for cleaning - wires, chairs and carpets with long nap need to be removed
- some garbage, for example cat food (large volume, but small weight), spreads out with side brushes
- scratched bumper and top cover

3.0 out of 5 stars Charger broke after six months, warranty claim not looking good.
Reviewed in Australia on July 22, 2018
Everything has been ok with it up until last month, the charger made a pop sound (six months old) and I'm now pursuing a warranty claim that does not look hopeful. Dealing with people where English is clearly not their first language...
The robot picks up the basic dirt and dust ok. I don't think the sensor on it is very advanced though, it scrapes along our skirting boards sometimes and leaves black rub marks. Also it gets jammed in amongst the chairs at our dining table occasionaly but we could probably help it out a bit more in that respect.
The app is good though, the bot will upload its status and a little cleaning map that it determined which is cool and you can turn it on remotely using the app.

2.0 out of 5 stars Connectivity Issues
Reviewed in Canada on December 6, 2017
Currently really love my purchase after spending a lot of time researching. This one always came up at the top or near the top on reviews and it doesn’t disappoint. Does the perimeter first and goes through the middle of rooms after. Usually very good about getting out of tight places, only been “stuck” a couple times after eating something it shouldn’t have. It’s really just a matter of doing a walk around before starting it up. Clean up is simple and I had no idea how much I had always missed before, running it every couple days saves a tonne of time.

Edit: Spoke too soon, the robot has lost connectivity to my wifi, neato support would rather blame and argue than actually provide a solution. I have tried every troubleshooting step I can come up with, including other routers, hotspot from phone, resetting everything etc. Apparently connectivity issues are pretty common among neato botvac's if anyone does a quick google search. I wish I had found that sooner. It's too bad because the cleaning actually works really well, but $800 for a brick that doesn't even have a remote when wifi breaks, is not useful to me. Perhaps I'll downgrade to the model without wifi to avoid problems altogether.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Robot Vacuum That I have Come Across
Reviewed in Canada on January 8, 2017
Wow, this is the best robot vacuum by far. We have a large layout and had to return a Roomba because it haphazardly cleaned and missed many areas. This Neato Botvac is incredible as it maps each area, then cleans it, then moves onto the next area. Best of all, you can see a map of the cleaning job when it is complete on the app. I would definitely buy another one for the upper level of the house, but hope that it may go on sale soon as the price is rather steep. However, you get what you pay for! I am very happy with this purchase, thank you.

1.0 out of 5 stars $968.26 Brick - Dead after 13 months (12 month warranty)
Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2018
They sure have these warranty periods nailed down. 12 month warranty on it, paid $968.26 for this as a Christmas gift for my wife 1 months ago. The unit stopped working this week. Still waiting on follow up with neato. If they don't support fixing this then that's rather sad. It seems to be a problem with the lidar. The unit goes through its start sequence: drives forward a bit, spins up brushes and whatnot, then stops. Tries this 3 times then the screen says 'press ok to continue' on the unit. Phone will tell you error 3000. Very disappointed as this was one of the more expensive options at the time of purchase.
