- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2015I used this book for the surgery shelf exam and the clerkship. My honest opinion is that it is more helpful for the shelf than the wards. You'll definitely read pieces of information that will help you when pimped by attendings and residents. For non medical people, these are just two levels of doctors you see in teaching hospitals. I read it over twice in its entiretiy, plus answered all 180 questions, during the last 7 days before the shelf exam. Each time I found something that I had forgotten or did not fully undrstand from the first read. This book can be read in 4-5 hours if you stay focused, so I highly recommend it both for cursory review during the clerkship AND for cramming during the last few days of the clerkship, prior to the shelf exam. HOWEVER, this IS NOT ENOUGH for the shelf. I thought the NMS Casebook and First Aid Surgery were useful additions, especially for covering the random bits of information that this book does not cover.
Pros:
- small and easy to carry in white coat
- good comprehensive review for shelf exam (contains the MUST knows for the shelf)
- good for reviewing prior to entering a case so you don't look lost in front of your attending
Cons:
- does not have some details about the pathophysiology of diseases
- does not cover finer points about care, such as which antibiotics to use for anaerobic vs. gram negative infections, etc (penicillin, ampicillin, clinda?
Ultimately, doing well on the shelf requires you to have some ingenuity, as well as basic knowledge. Everything in this book is necessary to know, but not SUFFICIENT
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2016This is a great book to use in preparation for the surgery shelf. It's written in a concise, interesting and easily comprehensible manner. It conveniently fits in your white coat pocket so you can carry it around with you in the hospital to use during any periods of downtime (e.g. between cases).
I wouldn't use this as the sole resource for shelf exam prep, but it definitely includes the most high yield information and has really great practice questions in the back to help monitor your progress in mastering the material. I felt like this book along with Case Files-Surgery, Uworld surgery questions, and supplemental reading from the red NMS book (did not read NMS cover to cover) provided adequate study material in order to perform well on the surgery shelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2016Really great review for surgery clerkship and USMLE 2CK. Far more breadth of topics than surgery in UWorld and Kaplan (I've completed their QBanks for surgery clerkship). It contains many topics that are applicable to medicine clerkship, as well. Essentially the whole book is set up as a DDx list, and I've used it to to create lots of DDx lists for presenting Sx that I will use during emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine. The questions are great, although I recommend doing them in creative order (eg 1, 11, 21, 31, 41, etc... 2, 12, 22, 32, 42, etc...) since the questions tend to cluster on topics. Overall, this is one of my all-time favorite medical study books due to its great organization and simple appropriate knowledge for a 3rd year medical student. If you were to memorize this book, which is possible, you'd be in great shape for many of your clinical rotations.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2016Great overview of the things you need to know for your surgical rotation as a student. It focuses on the medicine aspect of surgery; it does not go heavily into detail on associated labs studies, imaging studies or types of surgical procedures needed. I'm a PA student but I know for the medical shelfs and my EOR exams the questions are all medicine based anyway. There are also more than 100 questions in the back which helped integrate the material.
Good for the price and for an introduction to surgery; not a great resource for those that want to go into it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2016I was recommended Dr. Pestana's Surgery Note by several of my colleagues who have already gone through the surgery rotation. Every single one of them highly recommended the notes and said there was no resource as good as these for the surgery rotation. So I decided to get one for myself and these notes are amazing! They are concise and very informative. The vignettes are similar to what you would see on the Step 2 and the descriptions give us the high yield facts and many clinical pearls. They summarize the basics and definitely take it to the next set where you feel comfortable and ready to study for step 2 CK. It is an unbelievable resource and I would highly recommend it for every medical student going through the surgery rotation!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2016Great book to have in your white coat while on the floor; my surgical rotation was always stop and go, so it's a good idea to carry around something like this. There are a couple hundred questions in the back that are mostly a review of the material covered in the book itself. Explanations are given by a page reference in the text, which is really nice.
This book is small and easy to get through multiple times. Definitely the "highest yield" resource I could find for the NBME shelf exam.
Would be a mistake to not use it, but don't expect a textbook.. this is literally just a book of high yield facts.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2017If you're in Medical School or PA School and have an upcoming Surgery Rotation, or if you're a Surgical Intern, please buy this book. This book has almost everything you'll ever need to stay on your toes when the Surgical Attending pimps you out in the OR or out on the floor with tough questions. You'll look forward to getting pimped because you'll know so many of the answers. This books is so good, and its imparted knowledge so useful, it's almost like cheating. So stop wondering how you'll survive your Surgery Rotation. Buy some coffee. And read this book. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent NBME study resource.
Very inexpensive and super high-yield. Won't get you through the NBME all the way but is an amazing resource to get you up to speed as quick as possible. Would highly recommend to anyone who needs to write the NBME. Not as helpful for on the ward stuff, but still great and a quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compact & concise
Excellent value for money and small enough to carry around throughout the day. A great balance between relevant details and not getting bogged down with too much unnecessary info. Between the UWorld practice questions and this book, I did very well on the Surgery NBME.
