I initially ordered the Corsair SP120 Performance Editions, but when placed horizontally on the radiator it would emit a rattling sound which really got on my nerves. So I returned them back to Amazon and ordered the newer Gentle Typhoon PWM editions to only find out the motor sound was worse than ever even on low RPM.
At this point I was just frustrated, so even though the ML series was quite new, was costly, and didn't have as much reviews, I decided to give them a try, and I think these are the best fans I've heard so far. There's literally no motor noise due to Magnetic Levitation, and the RPM curve via PWM is smoothest I've seen yet.
Keep in mind that these fans MUST BE controlled via PWM (either a controller, or from your motherboard PWM header). Not using PWM will run these at full speed, which will be quite loud. Controlling these via DC can work, but is not recommended as the range, and RPM curve will not be as smooth, which can produce unwanted noise.
Pros:
- Excellent RPM/noise curve
- Barely audible at lower RPM
- Build quality is superb
- Flat, sleeved cables
- Rubber on the contact points to reduce vibrations
- Looks sleek aesthetically
- Pushes more air at lower noise levels
- 5 year warranty from a company I consider the best at customer service and warranty replacement
Cons:
- Expensive. Although there are fans that perform better at lower cost (though at the cost of noise), I feel that it's totally worth it if you're sensitive to the motor noise like I am.
Something about the mounting of the MLs is so easy while the plastic feels so strong. I would buy more of these if I had the space just to install them. The screws are standard mounting screws that come with all sorts of other fans. The inner plastic of the hole must be softer than the rest of the fan housing. It was too easy to start the threadd and not in a bad way.
The fans alone are heavy and stiff. The white light emitting from the center looks much better than the old design and gives off plenty of light. See included picture.
Last note on them is that they are louder than other fans that I have owned. They are plugged into the motherboard running stock speeds. They move a ton of air. They sound really cool at start up. My case sounds like a wind tunnel.
I have 2 140mm lev fans and 3 120mm
Two of the 120s do not light up and are still held to the same build standard of the others.
