HEAT OUTPUT IS IMPRESSIVE

HEAT OUTPUT IS IMPRESSIVE
We just completed our first camping trip with the Outland 24" firepit. The pit arrived within two days of ordering and was well packaged in a large box. This pit in the box takes up significant room in the back of my truck while transporting to the campsite. Setup was exceedingly easy at the campsite. The first night I ran it pretty much full heat and ended up moving our camp chairs back from the heat. (I should have just reduced the heat via the regulator and saved gas.) On the second and third nights, I ran the pit at either its lowest setting or maybe about halfway between low and high. This was still plenty warm in the cool summer nights sitting at 5280' above sea level. We had 3 full nights of fire without smoke in our face, without having to constantly feed the fire, and able to cut the fire off safely and go to bed without worry at the end of the night. I estimate our total burn time at 8 hours. Had we bought firewood at the campground (5 to 6 sticks of dried pine for somewhere around $8.00 a bundle), I calculated we would have spent $60.00 over the three nights. We are no longer allowed to bring in our own firewood so this propane fired heater proved its worth on the first trip. I'll exchange the mostly empty 20 lb. cylinder for around $23.00. That is a decent savings over time compared to buying firewood. The primary negative I found was that with a propane fire you don't generate wood embers to cook in your Dutch oven. On the way home, I did not return the pit to its box and it fit nicely underneath my toolbox making significantly more room in the truck bed. The box will remain in use for storage between trips now.Update 08/30/2022: Enjoying our second camping trip with the firepit. Currently sitting at 5360' elevation and cloud and rain moves in. We moved the pit under our 13' x 13' shelter and are enjoying the 59 degree weather as the cloud rolls through. Wouldn't have a wood fire under the shelter!

5.0 out of 5 stars they’ll ship them all like this from now on
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2014
This was shipped by Amazon it its original box only. When it arrived I saw a big gash on the box. Sure enough, when I opened it there was a major dent in the rim of the firebowl. I immediately called the manufacturer, because the instructions say to call them first before returning it to the retailer. Well they told me to go ahead and contact Amazon for a replacement. I did the return online and it came today. This time the box was placed inside another box with some paper stuffing to protect the inner box. When I opened the box there was no damage. Hopefully, they’ll ship them all like this from now on.

This firepit works very well and puts out a lot of heat. The key to getting maximum heat is to make sure that you scatter the small rocks at the very bottom of the bowl. When you start laying the large rocks, do not set them too close to the gas ring. You don’t want to obstruct the holes at all. This will allow the flames to cascade around the larger rocks creating a high flame of 4 - 10 inches. If you let the rocks get too close to the holes the flames won’t be as high. The key is to create a circular tunnel of large rocks over the fire ring.

Another bonus is the plastic cover that comes with it. The instructions say to keep it out of the rain and to put it away during rainy weather. Well, I’m too lazy to lug it into the garage every time it rains. When I put the cover on it I was surprised that it covered the whole thing, even the flame-shaped holes on the side. You definitely don’t need to move it inside when it’s raining once the cover is protecting it.

I wasn’t keen on the aesthetics of a 20 lb. propane tank sitting out in the open so I also got this deck box to store it in. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00013BUW8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I had to cut out a circle in the bottom so that the tank would fit since the tank is too tall. Now I have a nice looking storage box to house the tank and also to serve as a nice side table. There’s enough room inside to store the firepit cover, a cushion or two, or whatever. There’s a small gap between the bottom and the patio for the hose to fit into so that the hose threads up through the bottom, which you have cut out, and into the tank.

Overall, an awesome fire pit. I used it on Thanksgiving night for several hours and didn’t see the gauge on my tank move very much.

Update 9/2/15: Still loving this fire pit. I replaced the light weight l lava rocks with regular red lava rocks from my local rock/masonry supplier. Very cheap way to go and the rocks will last forever unlike the ones that are supplied. I'm also adding a picture of the Rubbermaid Brute 44 gallon trash can lid which I use to provide a solid rain cover. It costs only $16 right now for the black one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005KD0U16/ref=mobile_oh_details_?ie=UTF8&psc=1#

4.0 out of 5 stars It's almost good as it gets for the size.
Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2022
Heat output is really good, with no breezes. Constant wind is a no go. Works good under the covered deck. Its comfy out with this thing on December 4th in Ky .
No real assembly needed. I would say to strategically build your rock pile for optimal flames though.
Maneuverability is good, easy to move where and when you need, get the bag.... comes with the cover as you'll need it to keep the rocks in while moving in the bag.

Few things I did not like while exploring though
1) Most fire rings have a central hook up and this does not which means if the rings gets worn there is no replacement or upgrades , so check the site and contact customer service to see if there are replacements.
2) This has a pressure switch. Must maintain a certain amount of pressure in order to function. Which also means buying a nice 150k BTU air mixture valve to get your flames higher and hotter wont work. You could but you would be Frankensteining it.
Its worth the buy ... It will get its use and long-term durability is still on question

It is made of good material and is a better buy than a 300 pit table which are not made for actual winter use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice unit....be careful how much you pay for it!
Reviewed in Canada on November 3, 2020
Have had this unit for a few weeks, assembly was simple, including conversion to NG. Initially flame looked more like my gas stove, very blue, not very aesthetically pleasing (see pics). While this is a very good combustion setup of air to fuel, I wanted the more orange/yellow look, similar to my 2 indoor gas fireplaces. Easy fix, just loosen screw and close air intake screen just behind control knob. This also reduces the sound of rushing gas. Note, this is for NG conversion only.
It really is a good unit but doesn’t give off as much heat as you’d expect, so I’ve ordered a vertical patio heater to supplement.
Dislikes:
- cover looks great, fits well. It is NOT waterproof. We’ve had lot of rain in recent weeks and rocks became saturated. Can’t imagine this will be good when temperatures start to freeze. So an alternative is imperative.
- Pricing! Originally saw this unit for $197. Discussed with family before buying, an hour later $214, which I payed. Couple days ago a friend said he’d be interested in buying one. I sent him info last night, listed at $185. This morning it’s $189?
Called Amazon Prime cs, couldn’t wouldn’t do anything. I literally have to order lower price unit and return the higher price one. No cost to me. Makes no sense but I save $30 or 15+%. And someone will be out a lot of shipping $$$. And sadly I won’t even take the new one out of the box, just stick the return label and take it to PO.
If Outland reaches out to me on this, I’ll be happy to revise this review. Stay tuned...
