Assembly was fast and straightforward. The instructions are clear and accurate, and I had it together in less than an hour. I had some concerns that having the whole kit mounted to a single central column might make for an excessively wobbly affair, but that hasn't been the case. On the contrary, I've found the TD-1K to be very stable.
The "brain" is very basic and simple to operate, but that's just fine with me. There are 15 different "kits" available, but about half of them are just variations of traditional drum sounds. It might seem redundant, but there's a lot of nuance that allows you to dial in exactly the sound you want, whether it's dry or drenched in reverb, or toms that thump or deeply resonate, and everything in between. Other kits offer more exotic choices that are fun to play with but aren't widely practical. Keep in mind that the kits are all-or-nothing. There's no option to customize the drum selection or tune the individual sounds. However, the samples are loud, clear, and reasonably authentic, and the drum pads are pressure sensitive allowing for some subtlety in playing.
Other features include an extremely comprehensive digital metronome to help you lock in your rhythm, coaching exercises to work on things like timing and consistent sticking, and a selection of 15 generic music loops in a variety of genres to give you something to play along with. There's also an auxiliary input so you can pipe in your favorite tunes from an external source and try to keep up with Alex VanHalen or Louie Weaver.
Output options are pretty limited: there's a single 3mm headphone jack, and a USB type B connector for interfacing with a MIDI system. This kit won't produce any sound on its own other than the audible clickity-clack from hitting the rubber pads, so you'll either need headphones or an external amplifier to hear the drum samples. Also, the floor pedals aren't great. They're solid like the rest of the kit, but I've found them a little awkward to use, and they certainly don't feel like authentic acoustic pedals, but these can be upgraded for a price if it really bothers you.
All things considered, I'm very happy with my purchase. Now I just need to learn how to actually play!
Why five stars? I think has a lot of pros and is nearly perfect given its size and price (and beats many kits that are much larger or more expensive)
- The sound "samples" of the kits are amazingly accurate and "natural"
- The samples seem to change depending on how I hit the drum, like a real kit!
- The sounds sustain for a natural length of time, and fade out or stop abruptly when appropriate (more ways to say they sound completely natural as if from a real kit)
- The pedals, pads, and cymbals feel very close to the real things (if not perfect), which is impressive for the size.
- You can upgrade the kit with a better snare and kick pedal, as well as another cymbal (there's another wire anyway)
- Easy to use controls with valuable practice modes, 15 great sounding kits, and halfway-decent accompanying music when you need to play to a song (you can also plug-in anything that uses a stereo-mini jack to play along)
- MIDI connectivity
Cons:
- The options for positioning of the pads are quite limited
- The wires (not visible in the picture) are all visible when the kit is together (one from each pad and pedal all the way back to the brain)
- The pads are "pads." They are very nice gum pads to be sure, but not real heads or metal cymbals *(these pads feel better than other electronic kits I've played though, with the exception of mesh heads)*
In-between:
- No built in speakers. This is a con, because you need to provide your own to get any sound from the kit. This is also a pro, because you can get whatever you want and not have to deal with lugging around/paying for inferior "built-in" speakers.
- Did not come with sticks. A con because a complete newbie would have to go get some to actually play. A pro because you should go pick sticks appropriate to your size/playing style (and likely already have them if you are buying a kit)
- The "brain" is simplified from higher-end kits. This is a pro for folks who just want to play a great sounding kit (honestly, I can't say how great it sounds often enough). This is a con for anyone who is looking to do more complicated things, though the MIDI connectivity opens some doors to solve that.
In my opinion the pros are all on the key important points and the cons are all less important (or can be solved with a more expensive kit/frame to mount to/software, etc.). In particular the con concerning "pads" is not even really fair, since I'm comparing them to either real drums or the nearly-real mesh heads. I'd say those are both more "real" feeling (especially the real ones amiright?); however, these are the best of the "gum" style pads I've used.
I usually don't like to qualify things by cost in reviews, since the merits of a product should cover it. But for the price I feel I got an excellent practice kit. For this price I would expect a very poor real drum kit with no cymbals, hardware, pedals, etc. This kit has all of the basic pieces for a kit. It sounds great. It feels natural. It is not huge or heavy. I can play at night with headphones. Perfect for me and, while it is not professional looking, it certainly produces sounds that would sound professional (natural) at a gig.
Hope that helps!
Update, I still love this kit, but just noticed the price shot up to nearly double what I paid. Makes the "value for money" comments above seem a little off... Anyhow, do yourself a favor and look for this kit at the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (searching "MSRP Roland TD-1K" on google works).
Initial Setup is a pain, but after that, the kit moves pretty easily and sounds decent. There is enough touch that my son is learning the right skills, and some of the practice tools (songs with click and a tool that displays rushing and dragging) are pretty cool. Last week my 7 year old sat in for a few songs in a jam, kept good time, and basically made things better. I believe that the transition from being able to produce a beat for a few seconds, to being able to keep time for your fellow musicians came from repeatedly playing against the built in practice songs.
For highly paid stadium performances to tens-of-thousands, this is probably not the right gear. But for small or even medium club performances where speed of setup and reducing the SoundGuy's nightmare of miking random drums matter... This seems like a fine piece of kit.
So I am guessing that either this will be all he needs, or it will STILL be a useful compliment to his expensive pro kit. In either case, I feel good about my purchase.
Top reviews from other countries
Only thing that could have been better is the sound of the bass drum, it feels a little dry. But that's not enough to reduce the 5 star rating. :)
