Pros:
It's big, smooth and the 2ms response really cuts down on the ghosting once set properly. The image is very respectable considering the type of panel and it's a great price even not on sale!
Cons:
The control panel is a little confusing. As long as you're not expecting IPS performance from a TN panel, you'll be pleased with this purchase. However, I am a casual FPS and a action gamer at home and this panel is great for that. 1920x1080 for such a large panel is a bit low but most games don't go above that at the moment so it's a good res for the time being. I gave it 5 stars because although it does require some work to get the image look right, it does eventually look really good.
Summary:
This is a great monitor if you're expecting decent performance at 1920x1080 without having to spend the extra money for in ISP monitor.
Given it has such good reviews l decided to buy one. After all, l mainly bought it for 'office use' (at home): word, internet browse and movie watching. And l will only use it for a year.
Back home, l have an ASUS PB298Q (IPS, ultra-wide monitor) for which l paid $450. lt's an IPS monitor and you can tell the difference: deeper blacks and better color reproduction. Now, is it worth the extra price? Not for me, not at all.
"So, do l like it?"
l absolutely love this AOC monitor. l really do. l don't miss the other one (Asus), at all. Unless you need the best image quality (for photography, video editing or any application where 'color accuracy' or 'extra resolution' is recommended) or you're very picky, l truly believe you'll love this AOC.
If screen resolution puts you off, let me tell you that you'll be very happy with this one. Everything looks and reads fantastic. Also, if you're into gaming, you won't need the extra GPU power to move extra pixels (an old gtx 970 will do the job perfectly).
Other:
- l haven't tried the on-screen menu (you need a CD reader to install the program!).
- If you like to tweak the monitor settings often and you can't install the on-screen menu program, then you'll find the monitor's buttons a bit clumsy.
- If you're one of those who hits the keys too hard while typing, then the monitor will swing a bit as you type.
Verdict: excellent monitor; l simply love it.
(Update April 2016) - Monitors have gone down in price quite a bit but this continues to be a great option still. I have since bought an ASUS IPS 27 inch monitor to use as well (MX279H). That ASUS is rated as one of the best 1080p monitors to this date. So how do the two compare? Honestly, the ASUS is better and more enjoyable to use and work on. The two monitors are side by side and I'm writing this updated review on them. Where the ASUS really shines brighter (no pun) is in the deep black colors and the whites. My biggest concern with the AOC was getting the colors calibrated. I think a lot of others had this issue too. Out of the box it just looked weird. Made me regret the purchase at first. Once I got the colors right, it was great. I enjoyed using it about a year before deciding to get my second monitor.
Comparison:
-Price: AOC Wins. Much cheaper
-Looks: ASUS Wins. The Aoc looks cheap, clunky and fat in comparison. The ASUS has a nice thin bezel and metal appearance. The two clash now. I contemplated getting a second Asus just for the looks.
-Image (Most important): It's hard to get a comparable image to see side by side. The ASUS's colors worked right out of the box where as the AOC took hours of tinkering. To this point I've given up getting the two to look the same. This mainly has to do with the ASUS having a more neutral color with better blacks. The AOC looks good too but can't really match the power of IPS.
Viewing Angles: ASUS wins - IPS means you can view the monitor at much more dramatic angles without losing quality. The AOC suffers from this. Not much of an issue for me as I use my monitors on a desk about two feet from my eyes.
-Value: Tie - This could go either way. The AOC wins for budget. The ASUS wins for features. The ASUS is one of the best and cheapest IPS monitors. The AOC is one of the best non-IPS monitors.
-Tilt: ASUS
-Mounting: AOC - The ASUS can't be mounted from the back. Because of this I decided not to mount the AOC. It'd look weird just having one mounted. This is major though. For some people this is a must have feature. Good job AOC!
Ports: Both offer similar amount of ports. Both lack USB. Didn't need it though. BOTH Don't have audio. AOC states this has audio? It doesn't though. BAD AOC. BAD!
Brightness: ASUS slightly wins. Both are on full brightness:
Image: ASUS wins. The Asus looks sharper, especially for text on white backgrounds.
Verdict - ASUS Wins
-When I first got the AOC. It was a huge upgrade from my laptop screen. For the price this was one of the best purchases of my life. I now have a gaming PC with the two monitors side by side. I have more disposable income. With that. If I were to buy two monitors, they'd both be the ASUS. This helps to get a more uniform color and aesthetic look. I still use my AOC and think it's a fantastic value still. I however see the value of having IPS and a brighter screen. When I first got the AOC I wanted to get the best bang for my buck. It continues to serve its purpose well
Recommendation:
If you're looking for a great value 27 inch 1080p monitor for the lowest price, the AOC is a great option. For the price range, other options tend to fall short. If looks and IPS are important, search elsewhere. I don't know if the ASUS continues to be the best value for this category, but I'd recommend checking it out.
Top reviews from other countries
Colors are better on the ASUS and easier to adjust than the 27" which I'm still fighting to learn how to. Managed to get the colors a little bit better on it but not as good as I would like. I do like the 27" screen but I'm thinking of upgrading it to an ASUS 27" and giving the AOC to another CAD user.
The product is excellent. But unfortunately it came without installation CD and screen+ software. Thanks to the service of the provider because they sent me the links to get all missing information. By the way I didn't need the CD driver because it was really a plug and play installation. Windows 7 did the job for me. But you definitively need the SCreen+ software.
