"Daddy, what's wrong? Is the crown too tight?"
"No. It's just..."
Liesl placed her little hands on his cheeks and stared into his eyes. "Does your heart hurt again? 'Cause I can give it another kiss. Sometimes, it takes a whole bunch."
And sometimes in a single instant, it just took the sweetness of one little girl, the happy screaming laughter of his kids, and the loving indulgence of his wife to set everything in his world right again.

Edgard covered Trevor's restless hand with his and threaded their fingers together.
Chassie kissed the top of their son Westin's head. "See how Daddy and Papai are holding hands? They love each other. Some people think it's wrong. That two men shouldn't love each other each other like that."
"But why not?"
"We honestly don't know."
Trevor and Edgard reached for Chassie's hands at the same time.
"And some people don't think it's right that your Daddy and I love each other, and we both love your Mama, and she loves us both back," Edgard said.
Westin had three loving parents. In what universe was that wrong?

Jack's job as her baby daddy entailed three things:
- Sucking it up and listening to her every pregnancy complaint like she was reciting secret stock tips.
- Keeping her fed and never ever ever mentioning the amount of food she consumed on a daily basis.
- Fulfilling her s*xual needs whenever and wherever she wanted; or keeping his d*ck away from her on those bad pregnancy days she suspected she'd chop it off if he showed it to her.

PURE GENIUS! are the two words that come to mind after reading Lorelei James' latest release in the Rough Riders series, Short Rides. Ms. James is a mastermind at combining fantasy, fiction, and real life situations to pen compelling stories that warm your heart, put a smile on your face, and heat up your body in all the right places. Short Rides is the perfect compliment to the Rough Riders series for readers who need a quick fix of some of their favorite characters.
King of Hearts
In King of Hearts, Ms. James delves into the difficult subject of PTSD and the struggles that veterians deal with on a daily basis. She handles this difficult topic with finesse, class, and reality as Cam McKay's struggles with PTSD pushes itself once again to the forefront of his mind after he's called to the scene of a murder/homicide. What increased the depth of this short story is how Ms. James focused on the importance of family and friends to help victims of PTSD. Add a few smoldering love scenes, some rambunctious kids who will steal your heart and put a smile on your face, and a loving wife who's determined to help her man fight his demons and you have an awesome short read that will keep you engaged until the very end.
Rough Road
In Rough Road, we get a glimspe of how things are going for Chassie, Trevor and Edgard Glanzer. I love this polyamorous relationship and was excited to see how things were going with this dynamic trio and their children. While things are great on the homefront, outside of it is another story. Chassie, Trevor and Edgard knew that the untraditional lifestyle they had chosen to lead wouldn't be easy, but when it begins to affect their children, these three must ban together and allow some family members to assist in making the hardest decision of their lives. Ms. James has created a riveting story that entails bigoted people who don't understand how much love the heart can handle. Instead, they pose their views on the Glanzer family and begin instilling hate in their children. Rough Road is as real as it gets and there are individuals and families dealing with these same issues at some level on a daily basis. I loved how Ms. James didn't sugarcoat the situation. She emphasized that life is hard and unfortunately, we can't protect our children from everything. But it's imperative that we stand up for what we believe not only for our own sakes, but also for our children even when things get tough. Furthermore, she emphasizes that no one person or family is an island of it's own, so it's important to ask for help from your larger family when the going gets tough because if you're a McKay or West, they have your back. :)
All Knocked Up
All Knocked Up is the perfect title for this at times hiliarious, riveting story as the reader is allowed to witness how Jack and Keely have grown over the years. The witty banter and sarcasm still exist in this dynamic duo's realtionship, but also the unwavering love that these two have for one another. I must admit that Keely and Jack are two of my favorite Rough Riders' characters, so I was estatic to see how they were doing. The chemistry is still smoking hot after four years of marriage and the start of a family. Ms. James does an excellent job of showing how a couple's life changes once they begin having kids and it ranges from the mother's body after childbirth, to their sex life, to the early morning feedings, and simple exhaustion of it all. But more importantly, Ms. James shows how a man and woman who desperately love one another can work through anythng as long as they keep the lines of communication open.
I absolutely loved Short Rides and hope that Ms. James will do more of these short anthologies that bring us up to speed with our favorite characters. The dialogue remains crisp, witty, and fluid, the characters are genuine, flawed, and lovable, and the situations are as real as they come. If you haven't picked up a copy of Short Rides, then do so today. Ms. James has hit a homerun with her first self-published anthology and I for one want more of them. Bravo Ms. James and thanks for bringing a little more joy into my world with your Rough Riders series.
Rated 5 Ravens and a Recommended Read by AJ!
Cam McKay is a man who has been severely injured as a result of his service in the Iraqi Conflict and yet has worked through lots of his issues with the help and support of his intrepid spouse, the delightful Domini and her wonderful sense of humor, her knowledge of the world, and her incredible patience with Cam as he continues to struggle with his PTSD issues. Here he has encountered one of the worst crime scenes ever to be seen in Sundance, Wyoming, with its small town life and its deep sense of family and friendship. Dealing with the crime itself, dealing with the fact that it was two people he had known nearly forever, dealing with the recriminations and grief of the victims' families throws Cam into a tailspin, all on Valentine's Day. And as if that isn't enough, it's all happening while Domini and his six kids are planning a romping good evening to surprise their dad who they are prepared to crown "King of Hearts." It's a warm and wonderful story that is built around the core of a terrible tragedy--warm and wonderful because of Domini's care and unconditional love and the patience and love of his kids in the face of his terrible sadness. Terrible because it brings back all the nightmares, the sense of hopelessness, the survivor guilt that had been far less of a problem in recent years. Yet this short story is a lesson in the power of patience and love to bring light into darkness and to how there is no statute of limitations on the power of love to heal wounds.
Chassie West Glanzer and her hunky husbands Edgard and Trevor have a whole different set of troubles landing on their doorstep. Trevor and Chassie are set to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary as well as their eighth anniversary as a triad since Edgard became a permanent part of their relationship. Now they have three children and the bigotry of an extremely conservative community rears its head in the form of bullying at their son's grade school. A first grader handling epithets against his family for their "perverted" lifestyle is way beyond acceptable and on the eve of a special get-away weekend, these three loving and very dedicated parents must face the task of explaining the actions of those who would seek to make this little six year old boy feel bad about the love shared by his folks. This story is very much focused on how these three deal with this challenge, but it is also about how they celebrate their love, how it has grown and matured in their years together, and how they are looking to the future together. Ms James never backs away from the tough stuff here. While I don't include spoilers, I will give you a clue that this novella has included one of the finest incidents in all of this series--what it really means to care about and support those we love. It's a tremendous part of this anthology and not to be missed.
Lastly, there is Keely McKay Donahue, caught in the throes of pregnancy hormones, dealing with her high-powered handsome and type A personality husband. After four years of marriage it is a well-known fact that these two have figured out that make-up sex is absolutely the best. And it's a good thing, because they know how to mix it up as well. They most definitely have their own particular dynamic, and even as they work through the issues of pregnancy successfully, there is the new challenge of what it means to be parents to lots of kids in a very short span of time. Yet again there is the factor of family loyalty, of knowing that in spite of everything that has happened in the past, in spite of the fact that Jack still thinks Keely's dad hasn't really accepted him, there is that sense of "circling the wagons" when potential tragedy is making an appearance in Keely and Jack's life and both of them have to face the possibilities that their lives may never be the same.
All in all, this is a wonderful book and one that I was not initially aware was even "out there." But I found it on Amazon and am delighted to have experienced it. Also made me want to go back and re-read some of the original stories about these special people. This book has been out since April, 2013, but it is worth the time and effort to enjoy. Don't miss it.
Rough Road -- Chassie, Trevor and Edgard Glanzer know they live an unorthodox life style but the love they all have for each other and their 3 kids has been enough. Now that their oldest has started school the unfortunate aspect of bigotry had affected there family. We get a glimpse of how these 3 not only keep a healthy sex life with 3 kids but also how they are going to have to deal with the prejudices their children face.
All Knocked Up -- Wild child and short fused Keely is pregnant. I am amazed that Jack lived for the 9 months. There were some very touching moments and also some funny ones that all have to deal with childbirth and what a woman's body and mind goes through afterwards. Love that we got to experience Keely's first birth her..
King of Hearts -- Deputy Cam McKay is called to a murder/suicide of Jim and Teresa Swensen. It's one of the worst things he had ever seen. When both sets up parents get there they are understandably very upset and things come to blows. The father of Jim asks Cam why he never helped his son with his PTSD. That since he had been thru so much himself he should have helped his boy. Cam had no idea that Jim had been in the services and feels extremely guilty over this. He also wonders if one day he will do the same thing to his family. He refuses to go home but Domitri sends Colt after him to bring him home to her and his children who are his greatest healers. This was a very short read but it sure packed an emotion punch and brought tears to my eyes.

Short Rides consists of three stories:
King of Hearts - a catch up with Cameron McKay. This is a day in the life of the Sherriff's Deputy dealing with a tragic domestic incident call out which hits close to home with Cam.
Rough Road - is a catch up with the Glanzer family who have to deal with prejudice directed at their eldest child. There is also a hot reaffirming of their relationship with each other and we have the McKay and West clans gathering together to show their support.
All Knocked Up - is the story of Keely and Jack's pregnancy. The banter between these two continues but we also get to see Jack's soft side and the interaction between Keely and her mother and Jack and Keely's father is priceless.
I'm not going to give too much away suffice to say if you haven't read the series put it at the top of your list and if you are already a Rough Rider fan do not miss this addition to all that is the hot McKay's/Glanzers!!

King of Hearts Cam's story 8/10
Rough Roads Chassie, Trevor, and Edgar story 9.5/10
All Knocked Up 10/10
