Enter the Alvin. I can't say why, but I could write for hours straight with this pencil and never cramp. Maybe it's because the barrel has a little more girth than your average pencil or because of the added weight, but this pencil is probably single-handedly reducing my chance for arthritis. It also makes my handwriting about 20 times better. The lead smoothly glides across the paper and doesn't drag or lurch like other mechanical pencils seem to do. The lead will come out reliably in small increments. It won't suddenly jet out all at once like I've experienced with cheap plastic mechanical pencils. It's got fantastic fit and finish, feels solid the whole way through and won't jingle or rattle as you write. In short, once you've written with this pencil, you will not ever want to go back to buying those cheap packs of 20 mechanical pencils. The $10 price tag is definitely worth it. Hell, if the tip were a little more sturdy, I'd pay $30 for this pencil in a heartbeat. It's THAT good. Buy it, you'll love it, and you'll wonder why the hell you didn't shell out 10 measly dollars for this pencil earlier.
Let me say that this is EASILY worth its price!
Pros:
Excellent, confidence inspiring, build quality
Exceptional knurled grip section
Front balanced weight (making writing more comfortable)
Satisfying, solid lead advance click
Lead grade indicator (not necessarily useful to me)
Sturdy spring tensioned pocket clip
Lightweight
+ more!
Cons:
Plastic body (it is of a good quality and feels tough despite the fact)
Non-retractable lead sleeve (This is not so big of an issue, as most mechanical pencils are not. Just be careful not to poke yourself!
Lead grade indicator rotates instead of locking in place (This is more personal preference. I've yet to come across a pencil that does click into place. However, it is still quite stiff and is unlikely to move accidentally.)
This is an EXCELLENT quality pencil. The cons are very slight and more personal preference. I bought this at the same time as a Rotring 600, and although I prefer the Rotring's weight, this pencil is preferred when trying to write quickly or for a long period of time.
I haven't started using these three new ones, but they look just as high-quality as my old one. They have joined my daily go-along drawing kit, and I am sure they will too last for a long time. By "a long time," conservatively I would say at least 3 - 5 years.
Some might question, "These are just mechanical pencils. What's the big deal." Well, image these scenarios: When you want to jot down a hard-catch inspiration, the lead takes forever to come out; when you are in mid of drafting and accidentally drop the pencil, you have to spend 5 minutes on fixing the broken lead stuck in the pencil; when you want to create different line weights on your pencil drawing, all you have is a 0.5 mm pencil so you have to trace the same line over and over with immense pressure until the paper is poked through; when you want to quickly erase a small detail, the eraser on the back of your pencil smudges the pencil mark and leaves a bigger mess on the drawing; when you drawing a line along a ruler, perhaps it's due to the angle that you hold your pencil too acute, the lead breaks half way through the line and leaves a node on your smooth line; when you have only used the pencil for a couple of months, the plastic body of the pencil already looks so scratched and old.
Maybe none of these scenarios seems intolerable, but if you work at a high-pressure environment, where efficiency is the highly valued, and that you cherish your drawing dearly and want to complete it perfectionistically, you will understand how frustrating those scenarios can be.
There are many ways a mechanical pencil can fail the seemingly basic tasks, especially with the impact of time. Excellence, which often seems to be unachievable, is simply the accumulated result of fulfilling every requirement satisfyingly, plus some efforts that surpass basic expectations.
These pencils though are a bit pricey, but for people who draw/draft frequently, they are the best aides that will always complete tasks perfectly and with no doubt a worthwhile investment for the education/career.
