Editorial Reviews

2014 release, the 15th and final studio album from the veteran British Rock band. David Gilmour and Nick Mason went back and completed previously unreleased material recorded with the late Rick Wright. Gilmour began work on this project by returning to some 20 hours of leftover material plus material recorded with Pink Floyd touring musicians Guy Pratt on bass, Jon Carin on keyboards and Gary Wallis on percussion. A portion of these original recordings became THE DIVISION BELL, while the rest remained in the vaults. The album was co-produced with Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson.

Not their best album but still got Pink Floyd's magic

Not their best album but still got Pink Floyd's magic
5 years after its release, I finally bought Pink Floyd’s Endless River blu-ray edition and listened to it for the first time. I own everything Pink Floyd has commercially released (Discovery box set containing all of their albums *except this one* and Immersion box sets) and here is my review:As a hard-core Pink Floyd fan, I think the album is a good album. It’s not their best work but it certainly doesn’t deserve 1 star review.Even though I understand the general criticism that “it feels like a hotchpotch of their earlier works” and “crumbles of letfovers from their early studio efforts” and while these criticisms are not entirely inaccurate, I still think the album deserves at least 3 stars. As for the criticism “this doesn’t sound like Pink Floyd”, I disagree and suspect that it comes from those who know of Pink Floyd by their most commercially successful albums in the 70s (The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, The Animals”). Yes, it is true that Endless River doesn’t sound like The Dark Side of The Moon or like the other aforementioned albums. However, Pink Floyd has always been a progressive band that experimented with different sounds. To those folks who say “this doesn’t sound like Pink Floyd”, I suggest that they listen to Ummagumma 1969 Pink Floyd album which also contains a lot of instrumental tracks and songs from their previously released albums. This is certainly not the first time Pink Floyd has released an album with dominantly instrumental songs. Even Atom Heart Matter 1970 album had a lot of instrumental tracks.I think a more fair criticism is that some of the tunes sound like the tunes from their previous albums or maybe a slightly changed versions of those tunes. I am not saying all the songs suffer from this criticism, but there are definitely some moments while you think “hey, I’ve heard that tune or something similar on Momentary Lapse of Reason or on Division Bell”. But then again, as a Pink Floyd fan, you may have experienced this feeling probably when you listened to Final Cut, the 1983 album that came after The Wall and has a lot of similar sounds/tunes from the Wall album. One other thing to keep in mind is that Pink Floyd has now only 2 members left and the band is not really active. So it is not fair to compare this album to the aforementioned Pink Floyd albums which are probably the greatest rock albums in history released at a time when Pink Floyd was at the top of their game with Roger Waters and the late Richard Wright and while they were in their 30s.With that said, if you are a hard-core Pink Floyd fan you will definitely enjoy this album. If you can get past the disappointment about the expectations of what this album should be and listen to it for what it is, any music fan will find the tunes on this album quite enjoyable. Now about the product itself, I added some photos to show you what the package looks like and what it contains. It comes in a nice box and contains a CD disc and a blu-ray disc, a hard cover booklet with photos and info about the album, and 3 post cards. Blu-ray disc contains audio and video and has extras (there are a couple of extra tracks that are not on the CD album, my favorite is a track called “Nervana”). You can listen to these extra tracks as audio or video (videos are not video clips or short films like the ones shown at Pink Floyd’s concerts but they are rather videos of the band playing and recording in the studio). My only minor complaint is regarding the menu behavior: You can select “play all” extras but cannot separate audio from videos. In other words, when you select “play all”, it will play all of the audio tracks and then it will play all of the video tracks. There is no option to say “play all videos”. I think they should have had separate “play all” menu options, one for audio and one for video. Another minor complaint is that the album is segmented into 4 segments, Side 1 thru Side 4 but you cannot see at which track a segment begins or ends and you cannot choose to play a particular side (say you want to play the tracks on side 3 only). Since this separation is not provided, I am not sure why they bothered to show the 4 sides on the menu. Wha they should have done was to provide an option to play side 1, 2, etc. When the user selects a side, it would show the tracks on that side with play all or play a particular track. This is just a minor complaint and I wouldn’t have made it if they didn’t display the Side 1, 2, etc. info.
