Out of the Box: Getting started with the Gear 360 2017 was very simple. I un-boxed and charged it, read the quick start guide, downloaded the Samsung Gear 360 app from PlayStore and I was taking photos and shooting video right away. I literally posted my first 360-degree video to Facebook within 10-minutes of connecting the camera to my Android. It is very simple and worked flawlessly. To get a little farther, I watched a couple of quick YouTube videos to learn more about the live streaming functionality, which I may never use, but is still cool if you have internet excellent bandwidth.
Pros: Again, simplicity. With my Samsung S7 Edge Android phone, I was able to snap fun photos and video and post to Facebook with little effort. The photo/video is converted from the dual-fish-eye view to the 360-degree format automatically, so it is literally as simple as uploading. The battery life is very good (held a charge for the entire week with intermittent use), and the Bluetooth connection to the phone worked flawlessly every time. As a 360-degree camera, this is really easy to use. It now works with Android and IOS (newer versions), although the Live Streaming doesn't currently work with IOS, and there may still be a lower resolution in IOS at this time.
Cons: I really didn't have a negative experience with the Gear 360 yet. Your IOS and Android phone just need to be on a compatible OS. The one main flaw was this:
- The Gear 360 is top heavy. It simply falls over if there is the least amount of instability under the base, and the rubber "stabilizer" ring supplied with it is useless (if not detrimental in giving a false sense of security). I literally have placed the camera on a slightly-less-than-horizontal surface, and it is perfectly fine for 30-seconds, then it suddenly falls over like a drunk sailor for no apparent reason. I've scratched both lenses, and here's the next big negative, there's no lens replacement kit for this camera (yet, maybe?). To repair the lens, you must currently ship it back to Korea.
Advice? If you buy this camera, buy a decent little tripod for it and take the tripod with you wherever you go. Throw the "stabilizer ring" in the recycle bin and just use the tripod.
I figured a company like Samsung could make a second-generation product that at least works well enough for my basic needs, right? Nah.
I downloaded the Gear 360 app for iOS and connected the camera via WiFi. And then... well, nothing. After connecting the camera, the Gear 360 app, the only app I can use to properly view my media, would crash after several seconds from opening. I restarted my phone, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, connected the camera again, same result. Reviews of the app are overwhelmingly bad, citing the same issue as mine, or similar problems that hinder the app's overall usability. Samsung responded to some reviews about a month ago, promising a fix in the near future, but still nothing.
But alas, there are other options. Samsung offers the Gear 360 ActionDirector program for Windows! After navigating Samsung's website to find the software, downloading the 500mb+ installer, installing the software, I'm presented with a software activation screen, asking for a product key. "Your product key can be found in your user manual. If your product key is lost, contact Samsung support." I checked everywhere in my product packaging. There's no product key. After waiting several minutes to chat with a Samsung representative, they gave me a product key. To my dismay, 360 videos would not display properly on my PC. I tinkered with settings, and no luck. Photos worked fine, though.
There's still hope -- there's a Mac app as well! I installed the Mac software, and it only asked for my serial number rather than a product key to install! To my surprise, it worked. I was able to upload and view my 360 videos and pictures on my Mac. Finally. Cool.
But, like, it still doesn't work on my only VR-capable device -- my iPhone. I want to know that these photos and videos are in a format that will be able to be view on VR headsets in the future, and I still can't do that.
Perhaps I should have heeded caution when expecting a Samsung product to work seamlessly with my iPhone, but at the same time, Samsung shouldn't have advertised compatibility for iPhone alongside its lineup of Galaxy phones.

In the end really glad I bought it and it is the camera I use with my Smartphone camera to record holiday photos.
Don't forget you need to buy a decent capacity storage card.
