On the surface it's hard to understand why this collection is so highly regarded by Sinatra fans....true it's a hodgepodge collection of singles and (at the time) obscure album cuts, yet we remember it fondly and still wonder why it hasn't seen a domestic CD issue...

Here are some of the reasons it holds a special place in our hearts:

*It gave the general public its first hearing of Sinatra's iconic "Luck Be A Lady," which, prior to Sinatra '65, was buried in that poor selling box set of show tunes known as "The Reprise Repetory Company" (Allen Sherman singing "Sue Me"???)..same holds true for Sinatra's brilliant "When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love" from Finian's Rainbow

Included as well were the unedited releases of "My Kind of Town" and "I Like to Lead When I Dance"from "Robin and the 7 Hoods"only available prior to this on the more than obscure "Hoods" soundtrack.....recall the 45 release of both songs edited out the verses....

Sinatra's "Stay With Me" from the "Cardinal" is a beautifully sung little masterpiece with a glorious Don Costa chart,..

What gave the package it's somewhat uneven, jangled feel was the inclusion of the Jimmy Bowen-Ernie Freeman pop singles:Tell Her, "Somewhere In Your Heart" "When Somebody Loves You" et al.......seemingly corny as they were at the time, they served their purpose, getting Sinatra back on top 40 radio when top 40 radio didn't want to play him........
..and Baker Knight's "Anytime At All" is still a hoot( "even if I have to crawllllllll".....")

Bear in mind "Sinatra 65" was a commercial success, hitting the Billboard charts at number 9 (right in the midst of Beatleland) and stayed on the charts for weeks to come///

Oh yes...it's got a great cover......with all the song titles right above Frank's behatted smile!

The Singer Today SINATRA '65, as the back of the album boldly announces. I have owned this album on vinyl since 1972, when I first discovered the music of Frank Sinatra (and it was the first Sinatra LP I purchased, out of my own allowance, as I was just 13 years old at the time). I am here to tell you that this is a big, bold and beautiful Sinatra album. Sinatra is at his zenith. The voice is in super top form on every selection in this album. "Tell Her (You Love Her Each Day)" and "When Somebody Loves You" were recorded in Hollywood on April 14, 1965 and these selections were arranged by Ernie Freeman. They have a fresh, new (in 1965) driving beat and chorus behind Sinatra and although some fans don't particularly care for the Ernie Freeman treatment, I personally love it. It showed that Sinatra could indeed swing with the times by putting his golden voice to a new sound, while remaining distinctively Sinatra. More traditionally arranged numbers on the album include "Main Theme from The Cardinal" where Sinatra has a chance to magnificently stretch his chords to serious depths and "I've Never Been In Love Before" containing all the strings and sentimental verse we associate with Sinatra. The album ends with a powerful, Vegas-like Sinatra of "Luck Be A Lady". One can almost see Frank smiling while he shoots the dice (and shouts out "Eleven!" but that you can see on A Man And His Music, Frank Sinatra TV Special from 1966 and available on DVD). Finally, the CD is very well recorded in stereo and sounds good (if your stereo component has the ability, like mine, to isolate channels, you can isolate the right side channel to hear primarily Frank's voice with no music. It's a real treat to hear this famous voice alone, doing it's incredible, amazing thing).

One of the best sounding Frank Sinatra recordings I have listened to. Usually older music sounds like it’s coming out of a can and the musical instruments are indistinguishable. This album is clear and crisp. Love the sound of this album.

This is like two albums. One is newer songs, such as Tell Her You Love Her, When Somebody Loves, You, Somewhere in Your Heart, all arranged by Ernie Freeman, all with similar treatment, strong beat, lots of strings, chorus. A 60's pop sound, music that was current then but is rarely played as part of Sinatra's greatest. Then there are some amazing pieces. My Kind of Town and Luck Be A Lady are arrangements that he continued to use in concerts for years after. I've Never Been in Love Before is a lovely treatment of a Broadway classic. I Like To Lead sounds like it was used in a TV show at some point (a Jimmy Van Heusen song) and it is very funny and perfectly sung. When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love, another Broadway song from Finian's Rainbow, may be one of the finest singing jobs by Frank Sinatra ever recorded, and that's saying a lot. Listen to him to him close the first (title) verse all in one breath and make it sound so effortless. His voice just floats, intonation perfect, shows humor in his pronunciation. Just excellent. So you have two completely different styles in the one album. It doesn't hang together at all. But I'm so happy with the second half of it, I don't even care. I would have bought the whole thing just to hear the last four I mentioned here. They are magnificent, the great singer at his peak of skill.

I wanted to download certain songs from the CD to my hard drive, but couldn't. Disappointed.

EVERYTIME I HAVE GOTTEN A SINATRA ALBUM I THINK IT IS THE BEST, BUT THIS IS I THINK BY FAR THE BEST OF FRANK, UPBEAT, THE SOUND IS FABULOUS, FRANK WAS DEFINITELY IN ONE OF HIS RAREST FORMS, AND AS YOU KNOW HE HAD MANY DIFFERENT RARE FORMS! IF YOU LISTEN TO THIS AND STILL THINK FRANK IS NOT THE GREATEST SINGER OF ALL TIME, MAYBE YOU REALLY DONT KNOW MUSIC.

Can't fault Sinatra because he doesn't leave the studio until the song sounds just right. He goes over and over a song until he likes what he's singing and it's the right notes for that type of song.He often changes the arranger's music score to suit he's type of style, which sometimes includes little bits of Sinatra witticisms.

This is one of the finest CD's with the music in the typical Sinatra style. I enjoyed every bit of this C.D. Great arrangements from start to finish. The show stopper in this..."Luck Be A Lady Tonight! I enjoyed it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful remastering of a great Sinatra LP never on CD.

I just received this 'Sinatra '65' CD from Amazon UK, and I have to say the remastered sound is superb! This record has never been issued on CD in the United States. I actually made a compilation of this recording from an LP. This new issue sounds so clear and clean that I'd recommend that those who have the original 1965 Reprise Lp put it away and purchase this CD from Amazon UK. The same advice goes for the 'America, I Hear You Singing' CD. At these prices, this group of Sinatra discs is worth purchasing. These are worth every cent you pay for them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vom Schließen einer unverständlichen Lücke...
Reviewed in Germany on July 26, 2010
