- Great Sound signature (music does not sound coloured)
- Gets fairly loud without crackling
- Small footprint (I expected it to be a little bigger)
- Decent amount of battery backup (approx 5.5 hours)
- Bluetooth connectivity
Cons
- Songpal app is ugly
- No Browser interface for eq settings
Compared to other premium bluetooth speakers:
1. Its nowhere near as bass heavy and artificial sounding as the Bose - When I was listening to a friends Bose Soundlink II I had to restrain myself from throwing that piece of junk out a window for how badly it was mangling some of my favourite songs.
2. The Jambox is more suited to being carried around in a picnic bag, however the sound quality on the Sony handily trumps the Jambox.
I would have loved to compare this to the polk camden square but wasn't able to get my hands on one. Comparing this to a Woodbourne or a B&W A7 would be kind of pointless as at that point you are jumping into a completely different level of speaker system.
I was looking for a bluetooth speaker that would primarily pair with my laptop and if need be could be paired with tablets and/or smartphones. Battery backup was a requirement but I didn't require hours and hours of battery backup - my use case is mostly for the home and for other environments where there are power outlets available. I also wanted something that would support a predominantly mobile lifestyle.
Sound quality was a critical consideration as this would be replacing a larger sound system with a semi-pro amp and high quality bookshelf speakers - Simply put when listening to Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Dire Straits and Coke Studio I wanted to be able to hear all the finer nuances of the music as well as pick up the microtones in Remember Shakti's Giriraj Sudha. For the moments when I wanted to listen to ES Posthumus or Beethoven or Sudha Raghunathan the speaker was still able to resolve the recording quite well.
The SRSX7 meets most of my requirements - it does not sound muffled (for a bluetooth speaker) and is able to put out an impressive amount of power while resolving sound quite well for a monopiece bluetooth speaker. It will let me watch a movie at a fairly decent volume as well as enjoy tunes while I continue to work. This has become my primary speaker.
Do not expect to bring the roof down with this speaker. Do not expect to pack a party of 20 people and more and pump tunes above the collective din. You will not be able to have the true stereo resolution from a dedicated 2.0/2.1 system but looking for that from a bluetooth speaker at this price point would be kind of ridiculous. If you want that you should have got a 2.0/2.1 system or spent on a good pair of headphones.
Bass output is more than sufficient unless you listen to r&b and hip hop. In which case buy a pair of beats. I have been able to squeeze up to 5.5 hours of music from the battery backup - however as has been noted in other reviews, there is a perceptible drop in power output when the power cord is unplugged. The ability to connect to Pandora and Sony Music is nice if a bit gimmicky.
The Songpal app works as advertised though i feel that it could have used a bit more polish which I would expect from Sony.
My only complaint is that this seems targeted squarely at smartphone and tablet users. I have a massive collection which is stored on my main computer and would appreciate having a browser interface to tap into the equalizer settings on the speaker.
Is it worth the price? That's a tough question - It delivers almost exactly what I wanted from a personal bluetooth speaker and so made me happy. If you prefer a very r&b/hip hop geared speaker this is not for you. If you like rock/classical (Western and Indian)/acoustic this speaker delivers quite well.
NOTE: I do not have an aptX source - so I cannot speak to sound quality over AptX.
I couldn't put 5 star however, overall, Its hardware is really well built and great quality.
Battery life with wi-fi ON, my case it plays 'net radio about 3-4 hrs with half or less
half volume.
I mainly use it to listen to internet radio which you can listen to a lot music just like FM
radio station. I didn't expected 'net radio would be such familiar to me with it, I used it
to listen to 'net radio more than to listen to my musics in my laptop.
It works on both itune airplay and win media player media stream as well but they require "play list"
making it is a little bit troublesome so that 'net radio would be much easier to listen to something with it.
I like Jazz, Bossa Nova, classic guitar, mainly instrumental musics. It might be my preference but
I liked this sound better than soundlink III. I hear SRS-X7 sounded more natural, well balanced
from low to high freq. range even in small volume. Vocal also sounded very clear.
Design: I think Soundlink series appeal too much in anywhere while SRS-X7 doesn't at all and
would be merged in to the room/interior quietly still sounding great quality, so that visitor won't be
realized from where such quality sound heard from at first.
Song-pal allows you to adjust equalizer and I like its wide stereo very much, it enhance stereo sound and it gives
unbelievable stereo sound from its small body. By the way, Song-pal is not so good responding. I use iphone 4S
but still feel like, press button, switch on and play music like classic CD players, that's much easier than using this.
SRS-X7/Song-pal will give you extra additional steps to listen to your favorite music. This is what I don't like.
Like TVs are not extincted by being replaced by laptop computers, this kind of device must be much easier, simpler
operation for doing the single task that is happening frequently I believe. Otherwise, it would be trouble some using
it and one day you will leave from favorite music if you are not a person who enjoys "operating" such device with
curiosity for such technology.
Lastly, internal battery is not replaceable, I wonder how it can be but not user replaceable.
This is my next concerns, how long the battery life would be and how much it cost to replace it.
==========up date Jan 19,2015===========
As I mentioned in the 1st review, troublesomeness of using this speaker made itself just an object in the room.
It's good to use when in some event at home, like home party, birthday party etc etc, but definitely it's
not for daily use.
Moreover, it has un-replaceable battery and if you do not take care of it well, battery would be easily die.
You know, Lipo battery shouldn't be kept fully charged or very log charged when not used for a while that would
cause deterioration of the battery and shorten battery life and SRS-X7 seems to behave strangely when battery is
nearly completely discharged, especially what I found is it won't start charging just by plugging power code when
it's really low battery then I found I have to press reset button to make it start charging.
Recently I just use it often to maintain battery condition...It wasn't my plan though, when I think about it,
it becomes stressful device.
Anyway, this speaker creates really really great sound therefore those negative points will upset me a lot.
When I think how music should be easily enjoyable, this speaker is way far off the idea. Song-pal is stressful
app and I don't like using it, so I use laptop then, I need power on laptop and wait, also power on the
speaker and wait to the link is established, run application on computer and wait until it runs.. too many
steps to just enjoy music.
but what made it work is "Audio in", it has audio in to hook up any music player this would be main connection to
supply sound to this speaker because this is the easiest way to play music. I do not hook up my iphone to be ready
for any call, so I am now needing portable music player such things.
It's good for event use but if you are looking for real daily easy life with your favorite music, I do not
recommend this. but its sound is really great.
