I'd buy one again and recommend it to a friend.
UPDATE: So, I ordered this on March 22, 2016. It is June 25, 2021. I install PC games onto this. It's been plugged into a computer for 70% of its life. I leave my computers running 24/7.
It's still working. It's had zero issues. YES, it used to get hot in my original computer which had an Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard. My last two motherboards haven't had this issue. It gets warm, yes.. but not hot like it used to. I'm on an Asus B450-F Gaming II board with a Ryzen 3600.
I have 3x SSD's and 3x HDD's. This Ultra Fit loads games at speeds on par with my SSD's. It's all about the seek times when loading games. I mean, really, most everything besides straight up copying large files are all about seek times.
100% satisfied. 1000%. I'd buy one again if I needed it because I know they work.
These 1 star reviews are unacceptable. It's hot? It's "unsafe"? It's blatantly wrong. As I've said, it's spent 70% or MORE of its life just plugged into a PC that's turned on. It's been used to install games onto for the last year and a half. It has lasted longer than most HDD's I've bought at this point and lived the better part of its lifespan being 90%+ full lol.
It's amazing.
As for speed, the advertisement on the packaging is not misleading. I transferred a movie file that was about 1GB and it took around 32 seconds. I also encrypted the same file to see if there was any difference in upload speed, but that took only 40 seconds.
In terms of usability, it's pretty friendly. I'm on a mac, so (at least in my opinion) some mac/window compatible apps can show up a little weird on the computer if you aren't used to it (e.g., you will still see the .exe files for windows when you click on the SanDisk drive--just ignore it, or delete). I like to just dive into the app and learn as I go, so I didn't really take too much time reading the instructions (the instruction 'manual' is a pdf file on the drive, which you'll find when you connect it to your computer).
There are two ways to save files. The first is to just place the files directly into the drive, this is the easiest method but it won't encrypt it. The second method is to open up the Sandisk SecureAccess Vault and save/encrypt the file from there. I like that I can backup my stuff in two ways.
All in all, it's pretty straight forward. A decent storage size for media files if you're on the go, easy to use encryption, quick upload timing, and super tiny design (just be sure to keep track of where you place it : )
As for the Sandisk ultra fit, I really liked the form factor and it seemed like the perfect flash drive on the go. Larger flash drives could get weighted down by keys and it's easy to pull out via keychain or lanyard.
This is also really fast. It feels faster than my seagate external drive (which is also USB 3.0). I haven't really put this through any synthetic benchmarks or ran CDM, but I don't feel the need. A 200mb video file appeared instantly on the drive when copied, which is fine for me.
I was originally hesitant to get this drive because I read about the heat output. I want to confirm that these claims are pretty accurate, the drive will get hot over time. I'm computer-savvy, but not a computer engineer or architect, so what I say may not be entirely accurate. But considering the size of this drive, the heat output isn't completely unexpected. There's no heat-sink or excess plastic to really curb the heat this high performance drive produces, so it's a bit hot to the touch compared to other drives. Whether this will affect the lifespan or performance of the drive remains to be seen, but since I'm usually going through a personal on-the-go flash drive every 2 or 3 years. In the short term, this doesn't seem to affect drive performance, it's just as fast hot as it is cool. I think this trade-off works for me.
If you're a power-user that has his flash drive in 24/7, a full drive like the Kingston DT might still be the way to go. I'll eventually be going that way as well, but right now I'm really impressed with this little drive and I will continue to use it until it croaks.
Back up your data, folks!
