Product Description
MAVEA is the new generation premium water filtration system made in Germany. It integrates the highest quality materials with intelligent design and a revolutionary recycling program that helps sustain healthy lives and a healthy planet. The distinctive European styling makes a statement on your kitchen counter or on your dining room table. The design strikes the perfect balance between form and function while easily and conveniently delivering clearer, cleaner, great tasting water. The MAVEA Elemaris XL water filtration pitcher has a large nine glass water capacity. Our radically new shaped filter delivers consistent flow and filtration over the life of the filter. No pre-soaking is required to activate the filters. The filter media is treated with silver to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Micro-screen in the filter reduces black particle release into the pitcher. The Elemaris XL pitcher is certified by WQA to NSF ANSI Standards 42 and 53 to significantly reduce chlorine taste and odor along with other unwanted elements. The unique pour through lid makes it easy to fill the pitcher. Simply turn on the tap and hold the pitcher under it. The water flow opens the lid and it closes automatically when the reservoir is full. The MAVEA Smart Meter measures water hardness. water volume and length of time the filter is in use. The Meter takes the guess work out of knowing when to replace your filter. The rubberized feet and handle are molded into the system to provide an elegant and functional touch. The soft handle is comfortable to hold while the feet prevent scratching or sweating on furniture or countertops. MAVEA is the only water filter company offering a comprehensive filter recycling program.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I've always been a bit skeptical about the water filter pitchers. After all, half of the pitcher is taken up by the filter itself so you can't really fit that much water in them. But this one claimed to hold a 9 cup capacity, which is not fantastic, but still a lot better than some of the others out there. And it came in a bunch of pretty colors, which for me is usually the easiest selling point a product can make. (And shiny, shiny helps too). So I got the bold Ruby Red pitcher, which since this pitcher comes in a whole variety of colors, probably isn't that special of a feature, unless you actually care what color your water is stored in.
The pitcher was easy to assemble and the filter extremely easy to install. It required two pitchers worth of water to be ran through first to set up the filter, but after that it was ready to go. Even better, there is a digital display attached to the top of the lid that shows how long your pitcher has left. It is marked in percents and rather going by time elapsed, the company claims it goes by how hard the water is and how hard the pitcher is working. I can believe that because I'm somewhat sporadic in my usage and the percentage has gone by that rather than by a specific timeline. And the filter lasts awhile too, it's just me and the animals and while I do drink a lot of water, so far this filter has lasted me over a month and is currently at 75%. Once again that usage is sporadic, but I do like that I'm getting my monies worth, and on average I probably use 2-3 pitchers worth of water a week. Refills aren't that expensive either compared to the other brands and you can order them in multiples to save on cost.
The actual design of the pitcher is sleek and easy to take apart and clean. There is no clouding of the plastic and it seems to be pretty bang and scratch resistant, as I am not the most careful person in the world. The lid has a great design in which you can actually fill the pitcher with the lid on and it opens a flap with the force of the water. The water fills until the upper container is full and then it filters down into the main vessel of the pitcher. The pitcher can hold about 1 1/2x the amount of the upper vessel, so it does take some watching. And be careful when moving when that upper vessel is full as the water can leak out of the handle where the areas are connected. Most people will fill this in their sink and not move it so it shouldn't be a problem, but sometimes I get a little impatient and rush things and this is probably why I experienced this issue. The lower compartment does hold 9 cups, but I do wish that I could actually fill up the entire pitcher, but that's probably just the obsessive characteristic of my personality wanting that. Actual pouring is easy as it comes out of the spout that is combined with the upper compartment and lid. The lid does lift up if need be though.
The water itself is very drinkable and the filter removes all the minerals, etc. that cause all the issues I have in this apartment. The cat bowl no longer looks like a limestone cave since I'm using the filter and I can't taste the overload of chemicals and minerals that I can just drinking from the tap. It's definitely increased how much I actually drink water as opposed to choosing another drink. The water tastes like water (nothing) and while I'm sure its removing good minerals as well as bad, its worth it to me to enjoy the taste and drink more water as opposed to avoiding it.
A pretty pitcher and reasonably cost effective. I would definitely go with this brand again if I were to get another water filter.
Review by M. Reynard 2012
Here is a summary of the various models I considered and their prices at the time I was in the market. I only looked at pitchers that can hold 6 or more 8-oz glasses. Smaller pitchers, in my opinion, are impractical:
$31.49 MAVEA 1001125 Elemaris XL 9-Cup Water Filtration Pitcher, Black
$29.75 PUR LED 11 Cup Pitcher
$25.99 Brita 10-Cup Everyday Water Filter Pitcher
$34.71 ZeroWater ZP-010 10-Cup Pitcher
$23.41 Clear2o CWS100AW Water Filtration Pitcher
All of the above filtration pitchers/dispensers, except for Clear2o, are filled from the top. Clear2o comes with a small hose that is used to attach it to the faucet. All the above filtration pitchers/dispensers are BPA free. In terms of filtering capability, the brands are comparable with each other.
I have had some experience with a few of the brands listed here. Years ago I had a PUR water faucet mounted filter and more recently I have used a Brita pitcher. My present kitchen faucet is this GROHE 33 759 SD0 Ladylux Plus Pull-out Kitchen Faucet, Stainless Steel model so a PUR faucet-mounted filter is not an option for me. This also eliminated the Clear2o model from my list. My experience with the Brita model has not been favorable primarily because of its tendency to leak little black bits of charcoal from the filter into the pitcher's fill reservoir.
The primary reason I don't drink as much water as I should is the less-than-pleasant smell and taste of my municipal tap water. While I appreciate the ability of all of these water pitchers to filter out "bad stuff", I was more interested in how these models stacked up in terms of their ability to remove smells and improve taste.
In a recent published indepenant taste test of these major brands, PUR and Brita were deemed acceptable, but a faint chlorine taste was retained in their filtered water. ZeroWater ranked as acceptable, but the Clear2o and Mavea were determined to be the best. However, the Mavea pitchers were noted above these other brands in particular for their capability to remove limescale.
The Clear2o filter pitcher fills and filters much faster than the other pitchers on my list because it attaches directly to a faucet and fills under pressure. This process is much quicker than letting the water slowly drip through the filter, but as mentioned above, this faucet connection design was not an option for me. This Mavea Elmaris pitcher was also a speed stand out in terms of its pour-through lid making refilling very easy and faster than the remaining pitchers on my list.
And finally, the Mavea is also stand out in terms of keeping those little black bits of filter charcoal contained in the filter where they belong. I noted several mentions of these black bit particles when I read reviews of competing brands.
Any of these brands of water filter pitchers can be successfully used to improve the quality of tap water. They can all help eliminate harmful impurities and allow the water to find its pleasant taste and transparency while preserving the beneficial salts and minerals. All of the filters consist essentially of activated carbon and ion exchange resin. Activated carbon has the action to filter the chlorine, certain pesticides and other organic impurities. The ion exchange resin improves the taste and removes odors. It also softens the water and reduces the presence of limestone and metals such as lead, copper and aluminum. In all listed models it usually takes three to four minutes to filter a liter (about 4.2 cups) of water.
I am completely satisfied with my decision to go with this Mavea pitcher. I think the pour through top is a brilliant design and far superior to the other models. I think the Mavea has the best filter design. The Mavea removes the odor and unpleasant taste from my local water and since I have had this pitcher I have been drinking a lot more water, and more importantly, enjoying it. And finally, I think that this is by far the most attractive of the pitchers I considered. It both looks and feels like a quality-engineered product and I feel I made the best and right decision going with this brand.
Hope this is helpful and that you will enjoy your new pitcher a much as I'm enjoying mine.

I'm really happy with the water this Mavea produces--I don't taste any chlorine or sulphur at all. I even like it better than the bottled water we were using. It fits well in our fridge (has flat sides as opposed to round) and the 9 cup capacity is great compared to others at 5 and 7 cups. It's a very attractive container and I like I don't have to remove the lid to refill, yet the lid is completely closed off (including a little swivel cover on the spout) which keeps out refrigerator odours. You only need to wash it well every 2 mos. when changing the filter, either by hand or pop in the diswasher. I worked out that over a year time period this is more cost effective than the bottled water we were using. I would highly recommend this product especially over that of Brita--it's so nice not having those carbon floaties!
My gripes include the digital timer on the top doesn't seem to work. Also, while I absolutely love the easy-in pour flap (you never have to remove the lid), if you fill the pitcher up too much (the flap starts to close), then water leaks down through the handle. Not a great design. Also, the spout lid cover keeps falling off. I snap it back in place and it holds for a while but then it winds up in the glass. So there is much room for improvement, even though it's better quality than any Brita I've owned.
Also, this 9 cup one is quite large - I bought it because it was cheaper than the smaller one. It gets rather heavy when full so maybe not the best choice if upper body strength or mobility is a factor. I also haven't owned this long enough to need the filter replaced - not sure if cost there will be a factor.
UPDATE: I've now owned this for over 2 years and still love it. Wanted to share a couple of things (1) I learned that Brita owns Mavea - it's a branding thing, like Toyota and Lexus. Doesn't change the fact that this product is better. You may see the word "Brita" on your replacement filter purchase. (2) The filters do last a long time and the water still tastes great. You can buy replacement filters on Amazon for $6 each (in a pack, on sale) and that filter lasts months. (3) Wanted to add photos of the jug's size (my hands are on the small size for a woman so this jug is difficult to lift when it's totally full) and its annoying spout (flimsy lock-in but can fall out). It works just as well leaving out the spout.
Hope this was helpful! Please ask me any questions you might have - am happy to share!

After doing tons of research on which water filtration pitcher was best (because water is pretty super important) I think this may be the best at keeping the good stuff in my water and filtering the bad stuff out.
The Mavea arrived really soon after I placed my order. The variety of colours it comes in is a nice bonus.
