There are some reviews here that the portable handsets didn't last long and made me wary to buy it. But we went to every office supply store and computer store in Atlanta and no one sells a phone that will work with 3 or more liens. So we took our chances on the AT&T setup.
We are very happy.
We work from home, a 3 store condo With the double antenna the other wireless handset works great 2 more floors down.
Setup was a breeze. Registering each hand set to the base took 45 seconds per phone. 2 people can be on the same line with someone else, that wasn't possible with our old Panasonic.
Intercom is easy, everything.
We did not setup voice mail, our phone company supplies it for us.
The only CON (small thing) is a feature. if you pick up line 1 and think "I should really be on line 2" and you just push line 2, you expect line one to hang up. It doesn't, it puts line 1 on hold. So 2 lines are "in use" easy to learn. if you pick up line 1 and want instead to make a call on line 2, hang up the phone and push "2" and go from there. The reasoning is this. if you're on line one talking and someone calls on line 2 you don't have to click HOLD. Pushing line 2 automatically places line 1 on hold.
So we are hoping the phones last well, they seem solid enough.
We highly recommend this phone. By the way for the base and 4 handsets we spent about $575 and other places on the internet had "similar" at&t phones for 50% to double that. Thanks Amazon.
we are prime members. We ORDERED this phone system on SATURDAY and Amazon has carriers who pick up on Saturday and Sunday at their facility. We got the phone on Monday. Phew. Great service.
1) The handset screen is so bright that, when a call comes in, it can wake anyone sleeping in the room. It's like a 60-watt light bulb. There's no way to dim or shut off that backlight. And speaking of lights, our former Panasonic system had a mast light on the antenna so you could turn off the ringer and still see incoming calls but the light was nowhere near as bright as the screen light on this system's handsets.
2) The base station has no volume control on the speaker so if anyone leaves a message, it's broadcast throughout the house. You can stop the message from being broadcast if you push the mute button each time when the message is being left but you can't set it permanently to mute or turn down the volume (you can adjust the volume when you go back to listen to the message).
3) You can't turn off the ringer for any one of the lines on the handsets. You can turn off all sounds but not, for example, turn off just one line. We use line 4 for the fax so all of the phones in the house ring when a fax comes in. You can change the ringtone for each of the four lines but there are only seven ringtone choices, all of which are more "industrial" that we'd like in our home. And why, in this age of unlimited ringtones, can't you add your own ringtone?
4) You have to program the directory on each handset and the base station. Why not allow people to program their frequently-called numbers in the base station and then "populate" all or some of the handsets automatically?
5) Each handset has a place on the screen that shows that there has been a missed call. If there has been even one missed call, that icon flashes continually on every handset. The only way to turn off that flashing icon is to scroll through all of the caller IDs which have come in, and you have to do that on each handset. They should allow you to turn off that feature.
6) Each handset can have its own mailbox but we only use the mailbox on the base station. However, when checking messages from a handset, it defaults to checking that handset's mailbox first. The system should allow you to program it so that when you go to check messages, you simply can access the base station mailbox directly.
7) The handsets have a jack for a corded headphone but why not add Bluetooth so you can use the same headset as your cellphone?
I have many more insights into the areas which could be improved but, the truth is that home phones are disappearing as many people only use cellphones instead of having a landline. Panasonic got out of this business so there's not that much of an incentive for AT&T or the few others still in this market to spend much on the R&D necessary to incorporate upgrades.
Would I buy it again? Yes, since this is the only four-line phone with built-in answering system I could find. The price is good and I would have given it five stars but for the strange omissions mentioned above.
