Sound.
Like other reviews it works great at about half volume, which fills a room with plenty of volume. There's no way to know how loud the volume is set. You have buttons that go up and down, but there's no indicator to measure how loud it really is. It definitely gets louder than necessary. I don't use it for parties. Other reviewers look for a speaker loud enough for a beach party. That's not my purpose, but I think it would work well at a back yard get together. The bass is quite present, especially when using an equalizer on my phone's music player. I often boost the bass and treble for a fuller sound. Sound comes out of the front and rear of the speaker. My biggest concern in buying a speaker was the sound quality, not battery or size or features (I was tempted by the Creative Roar because of some cool features). I also use the speaker with a "White-noise" app on my phone for sleeping. It makes the crickets sound quite authentic. The Sony has not disappointed me.
Build.
The speaker is very well built. I have not tried others to compare it to. I like the simple clean design with the style of buttons that are under the surface on the top of the speaker. Each button has a small LED light that comes on when in use. They are tiny lights that are quite visible, yet aren't super bright in the dark to disturb your sleep because they are on the top and don't shine toward you. The charge indicator only comes on when it's charging, not while on an plugged. It turns off when fully charged. The speaker has some weight to it. There are rubber feet on the bottom and it doesn't move about on the table due to vibration. Sony does make a case for it, but for $20 I'll just wrap it in a T-shirt in my bag.
Features.
I typically use the Sound button that makes a "surround sound" effect. In fact, it's sometimes hard to tell where in the room the sound is coming from because the room is nicely filled with sound. The speaker phone feature works well, but I don't really have much use for it. I tried it out and it does work well and sounds clear. There are two volume buttons on the top as well (up and down). I see this as an overall plus because it gives even greater volume control since I also control the volume from my phone. It's like having two independent volume controls. So you set a master range on the speaker itself and can fine tune that range from your phone, if that makes sense. There's a Bluetooth connect button on the top. It was super easy to pair with my phone and often auto connects when it's on and my phone is in range with Bluetooth on. If you've never connected anything before to your phone all you do it turn on the device and press the Bluetooth button. Then turn on Bluetooth on your phone and have it search for devices and select the Sony SRSX3. It's that simple. It has an Audio In jack which allows a standard 3.5 mm wired connection if you don't have Bluetooth. There's a button on top to choose that as a connection mode. There's even a small Reset hole in the back if you need it. I'm not sure when you would, but it's there.
Battery and Power.
I use it on battery and plugged in. The power plug is in the back corner next to the Audio In jack. The battery is rated at 7 hours. How long it lasts depends on how loud it is. Softer playing will allow the battery to last longer than 7 hours. I have yet to use it on battery long enough to test how long it runs out, but I'll trust the professional reviews on that one. I just love how portable this thing is. You just want to bring it everywhere because it sounds so good and it's so small. I like that it uses a standard micro USB charger, like on most phones (sorry Apple - you lose on this point). it comes with a USB plug for the wall and a fairly short cable for that (about 2 feet). It might work if your not far from a wall outlet or only use it plugged into a laptop, but you may want to get a standard micro USB wall charger with a longer cord. It turns itself off after a while of inactivity so I don't have to turn it off, even when it's plugged in.
Of the following: UE Boom, JBL Flip (My second favorite), Sharkk, Anker (small and big cube, premium), Fugoo, Sony SRSX5, Oontz Angle, Oontz Round, MagicBox, JBL Clip... The Sony sounds the best.
I understand there are different considerations, but sound was my biggest. I'm using these somewhere I'd want to be. Not in a rainstorm, not at the beach, not crawling through mud; but where most people are most of the time: at home, in the kitchen, at the table, in the room before bed, at the office, on the patio, at the park...
If you need something more weatherproof, look at the JBL. If you're a freak, look at the rugged Fugoo (which is supposed to be able to handle parkour in a thunderstorm).
This will amaze you on a daily basis. It's the speaker people can't believe produce the sound they hear. It sounds better than my dell computer speakers with the separate AC powered subwoofer. The build quailty is great. The battery is more than sufficient unless you're traveling the Austrailian outback on camel or something where you have no regular access to power.
The sound is incredible for a speaker of this size. It is truly amazing, has deep solid sound at any volume. Some have a threshold they can't go below, which sucks for going to sleep or working in an office environment. This won't piss off your cubicle neighbors and will come in handy for conference calls.
All the positive reviews are spot on. This speaker really amazes. I have to admit I think betamax, memory sticks and MiniDisks when I think Sony. This is truly fantastic and is worth every penny (and you'll save some pennies also, compared to the UE Boom, Fugoo, Bose...).
