Even coming from 4k, I was always a bit envious of the ultra-wide monitors. I looked at the Predator and ROG versions of these but they just seemed way too expensive. I was also looking at the LG and Dell offerings but nothing seemed to hit the sweet spot of higher than 60hz refresh, 1440p, and G-Sync (I'm currently running SLI 980TI's). I came across the Agon, read a few reviews, and pulled the trigger. Glad I did.
It takes a bit of calibration to make it look pleasing, at least to me. I turned down the brightness quite a bit. I noticed a bit of back light bleed on startup but once you're on the desktop or playing games it's a non-issue. Make sure you switch to 100hz in your display adapter properties since it's not in the menus on the monitor.
I use my computer primarily for music production and gaming. For music production, the extra width comes in handy when editing song tracks and viewing your project. In gaming, it's just so cool to have the extra space around the peripherals (not to mention the curve), as well as G-Sync. I've never experienced iG-Sync before but it just makes games so buttery smooth its a joy to play anything! I always thought V-Sync was just fine but this new technology is leaps and bounds ahead.
I hate to say it but I've only tested out one game so far, Far Cry Primal. It's averaging about 90fps with everything on Ultra+. It was averaging around 60-65 at 4k so it's a nice leap in FPS while also allowing me to wait on that next graphics card purchase. Cant' wait to play some more games on this soon.
Lastly, three other things I'll mention. The stand looks like it belongs in Star Trek TNG. It's really freaking cool looking and does the job well. It raises, lowers and swivels nicely. The LED's on the underside and back are fun, but IMO not necessary. I keep them on blue and match them with my keyboard. The headphone stand is awesome. I use it all the time.
If you're in the market for an ultra-wide 34-35 inch G-Sync monitor, definitely put the Agon on your short list.
Pros: 27 inch, ips, 4k gsync, adjustable height, tilt, and rotation, easy osd, great colors, blue light setting slider for night time use, stand and build are superb, and very responsive!
Cons: CAN NOT OVERCLOCK ABOVE 60HZ! fairly weak viewing angle (not an issue unless you have people watching on the sides), light bleed around edges during dark scenes ( not a huge issue for a 4k ips ), usb side ports only work if usb cable from monitor to pc is attached (more cables...).
Overall great monitor for the price. This is geared more for people who like how games look mixed with above par performance from a monitor. Not really meant for competitive gaming, that would be more of a 1440p 120hz+ monitor. A shame it cant overclock above 60hz, but playing at 55fps using gsync and rivatuner things are still very smooth! Obviously this is also dependant on pc and game development. Colors are great once calibrated, and the lights and darks are very good as well. If you want an ips 4k with gsync this really is a bargain!
My rig: i7 4790k @ 4.7ghz, msi gtx980ti @ 1430mhz (display port), 16gb 1600mhz ram. Win 10.
To start with, the build quality is amazing. The base is cool brushed metal and very substantial. When you adjust the height or the screen angle the feeling is smooth and solid. The casing feels like quality as well, and doesn’t “creak” when you move it or pick it up. The control buttons under the frame don’t jiggle around. I spent some good money on my PC because I game on it several hours per day, and this monitor does do my PC justice.
Second, you can see that AOC built this monitor for gamers. In addition to all the gaming specs, the base is “V” shaped so you can angle your keyboard when you play, as I like to do. There is a scale on the back showing the exact height of the monitor so you can reproduce your exact setup. There’s a retractable headset holder, and inputs for your headset and mouse on the side of the monitor, if that’s your preferred set up. I do, because I bring my headset around with me a lot, and I hate to keep crawling under my desk to plug it in and unplug it all the time like I used to do.
The most important thing about this monitor is of course the visual experience you have when you play. I play shooters and the response time and smoothness are all the best I’ve seen. CS:GO in 4k is mind-blowing, and getting 4k now means not needing to replace your monitor in 2 years. Make sure you use your display port input. I know there are other monitors with high-end gaming specs, but this just feels fast. It’s a G-Sync monitor that’s made to work with my GeForce gtx 1080 video card (make sure you have an Nvidia video card). Not once has the screen stuttered and I haven’t noticed any artifacting or tearing. I haven’t seen anything better in stores or at the shows I’ve been to.
What would I change about the monitor? It was not cheap. Nope. But I guess you get what you pay for, and after all, you’ll be looking at the monitor for hours a day for years. To me it was definitely worth it. If you’re a serious gamer with an Nvidia graphics card, you really need to see this monitor before you make your decision.
Top reviews from other countries
Part of that is due to it having a VA panel instead of the Asus/Acer IPS. It's that panel responsible for how great it performs in a dimly lit room. It's also that panel responsible for the main problem VA has always been known for: ghosting. And despite the various overdrive settings buried in this monitor's settings, nothing can remove them. You can leave overdrive off, set it to weak or low, or leave it on the medium it comes to, which is a good default because it produces the least (maximum gives you lighter coloured reverse ghosting).
The ghosting is even worse at framerates lower than 100 with G-Sync on, which will happen frequently unless you have a monster of a video card. But even when maxxing out the monitor's refresh rate it's still plenty visible, largely in darkened scenes. Even watching blu-rays on the screen is nearly unbearable, which is a shame given its size.
It's also barely worth mentioning but the little joystick that acts as a power button and navigating the menu is a bit awkward. Part of that is due to the onscreen interface itself, which is bizarrely ugly, not particularly intuitive, and contains fewer settings than you would expect of such a monitor.
It's a shame, because other than the ghosting there is a lot to like about this thing.
The VA panel had terrible trailing that made any movement on the screen have a shadow following it.
At first I thought it was just in games and had something to do with my settings, but then I noticed that even
moving my mouse cursor over a browser window, had a trail following it... it was unusable.
Amazon was great,II got the monitor very quickly and once I realized the issue and asked to return it,
it was a simple process and I got a full refund.
