I listen to my iPod at work/school/travel. Therefore, my earphone is daily beaten both indoor and outdoor. Basically, I listen to every kind of music from high def. vocal songs to strong base driven songs and from classic songs to pop songs. I would even use my earphone to listen to lossless music at home sometimes. When I pick an earphone, it has to offer me a strong beat of base while providing me a high level of clarity. I am not an audiophile who would spend $$ and do all the professional things even for a portable music player. Nothing is better than listen to the original instruments and voices at live. However, I am pretty picky on the quality of audio products since my dad and my uncles are audiophiles.
Little history of what I have owned:
I have own the Bose in-ear 2 headphone for almost 6 years. Currently it is my 2nd pair already and it never disappoint me, I really love it. However, the wire that connecting the 3.5mm head has wore out and it is starting to break apart. So, I need to search for a replacement and I want to try something new. Other earphones that impress me the most are Shure E3c and Westone UM2. The reason why I didn't pick them is mainly because of the price tag.(I am a student.)
Why I picked this:
I have read the review from Amazon and some other audiophile's forums. People claim that this earphone is an 20 bugs earphone which offering 100 to 200 bugs earphone's quality. There is not much negative feedback from users as well. Therefore, I think it is worth for me to give a try!
First impression on sound:
When I received it from Amazon, I plugged it into my iPod right away. First off, it has a very high treble which is very annoying to me but I guess maybe this is normal. All in all, my Boss has processed all the EQ setting with a chip on the earphone for me already and I may fooled by that. I have to set my EQ to reduce the treble. After the setting is done, I tested it out with different types of songs.
Performance of this earphone:
On base:
It is very impressive and I can say it is not worst than my Bose. The earphone is offering a pretty strong, punchy base which satisfy me when I listen to pop and rap like Dr. Dre and Black Eyed Peas.
On vocal:
I tested with the song Habanera and Time To Say Good Bye, it is not crystal clear but I believe an adjustment on high pass in EQ would solve the problem. Yet, I can say it is excellent considering for the price tag.
On acoustic:
I tested it with a lossless version of Hotel California live version, it is impressive and very clear. I can clearly hear and distinct different layers of the song.
On general:
It is very precise and it does emphasis the base while it won't kill the clarity of other elements of your song. Also, the noise isolating works out pretty good. I don't even realize my roommate had walked into my room when I was testing the earphone.
In conclusion:
It is really an excellent earphone. A 20 bugs earphone which offering the quality and performance very close to a 100-200 bugs earphone. One thing that I don't really like is that I have to deal with EQ setting in order to push the earphone close to my personal preference. I was thinking to give a 4 stars but really when I see the price again, it deserves a 5 star IMO. If you want an economic upgrade on your earphone and you do a bt care of the sound quality it offers, this is the best choice. If you consider yourself an audiophile, perhaps I don't think you would even glance on this product!
I don't now how durable is this earphone but again it just 20 bugs from Amazon. I don't mind to get another pair if it broken after couple years.
Disclaimer:
I'm sorry that you may have a hard time to read my review since English is not my first language.
The review is based on my personal preference on listening music and my two cents knowledge. I am not a profession on wave science. I don't mind you teach me or correct me if I made a mistake but if you do want to criticize my review, screw it.
Hope my review would become helpful.
Sound/Noise reduction- Do the CX 300s sound as good as the Bose QC 20s? No. Do they sound at least $35/$300= 11.7% as good? Absolutely. I would say they sound somewhere around 60-70% as good as the QCs. And around 70-80% as good for their noise cancelling ability despite the CXs only having passive noise reduction. If your mainly interested in noise reduction but don't want to shell out $300 these are without a doubt your best choice under $100. Sound quality alone there MAY be better sounding earphones out there for under $100 but I've certainly never heard them. If your something of an audiophile, don't mind putting a large sum of money into a few ounces of carefully constructed matter, and like the idea of owning Bose then the QCs are a good investment.
Durability- I've owned the same pair of CXs for about 5 months and they still work great despite having gotten completely immersed in water twice. The first time was being caught in a downpour for over an hour while they squished around in my soaked pocket. After that the right phone barely had any sound coming from it. I figured they were shot so I didn't give much thought when I accidently left them in with the laundry. Washed with hot water and detergent then dried on high heat, oh my poor abused trusty little earphones what a sad death... Oh My God They Work! Not only did they still function but both phones were back at full power and clarity. So if your phones ever die try throwing em in the wash and see what happens. The QCs seemed pretty durable as well. They were definitely constructed better than the CXs with a much stronger wire, I brought them to my welding job every day for 3 months and never had an issue. I never throw them in the laundry however so I can't speak for their washer resilience.
Comfort-The CXs are definitely the most comfortably ear phones I've used except for the QCs. They make a nice tight fit in your ear canal and only after very extended periods will you notice them at all. They do tend to gradually slip out, especially if you have slick waxy ear canals. The QCs were a bit ackward at first but after I was used to putting them in properly they became supremely comfortable and securely fitted. I'd work for hours going up and down ladders, using power tools, welding and never would they budge.
Other features- The CXs cord gets tangled way too easily. Put them in your pocket for five minutes and you'll have to do at least some untangling. Plus the split cords that run into the actual phones are very thin and I'm always concerned about tugging too hard when untangling. That said they are surpisingly durable, I've untangled them at least once a day for 5 months and they seem just as sturdy as the day I bought them. The QCs cord was much stronger and thicker and less prone to tangle. However the built in amplifier was a hassle, it was well worth it given its boost to the sound and powering the active noise cancellation but I don't miss having that extra bit ackwardly tucked into my pocket and having to charge it evert other day.
Conclusion- Ultimately just the fact that I can honestly make a fair comparison between the $300 Bose QC 20s and the $35 Sennheiser CX 300s is reason enough to buy the CX 300s. Even at their full $80 price the CXs are well worth it. Would I rather have my old QC 20s back? Yes. Would I have preferred to have never bought the QCs 20s and instead bought a pair of CX 300s? Well honestly I probably would have spent that $300 on something just as silly so in my case I'm glad I got to fully expierance the QCs and thus been able to give you this very excellent review. But as a normal person who values their money; don't waste your money on Bose unless that extra 30% better sound quality really impacts your listening.
CX- 5 stars. For the price their sound, comfort and durability are just astounding.
QC- 3-4 stars. I don't feel qualified to accurately rate them as I've never used any similarly priced earphones. They were definitely the best earphones I've ever used but I did always feel that I could have probably found a better pair for a better price. At least a hundred of that $300 is for having "Bose" printed on them.
