Update 01/30. Broke and axle stub. Seems it may have been defective however from the way I've bashed it maybe not. Still have not installed any aluminum upgrades so far even after putting a brushless 120A ESC and a 3000kv motor on it. On 2s LiPo this a very fun setup, on 3s it is wild crazy fast. (almost fried the Hobby Wing motor on 3s though because it is basically 380 motor internals in a ribbed 540/550 can). Will be upgrading to a full sized 3660 2600kv motor with possibly different gearing.
At $149.99, I think everyone agrees that you're getting decent value in the beginning. You can usually save money by selecting the "Like New" or "Very Good" etc. open boxes from Amazon Warehouse. The plastics and parts are definitely cheap/entry level. Although I am new to the hobby, I got tired of the underwhelming speed after about 8 runs. Some parts also broke. Here's what I bought for it over the span of a year:
-2S lipo battery (~$22 each and they can work in other RC cars, too), I have 3 total, makes the truck run longer and much faster!
-Lipo balance charger, charges 2 batteries at a time (~$56), necessary if you're going with Lipo batteries at all (2S and up)
-Hobbywing EZRUN brushless ESC and motor combo (~$80), brushless is a must if you want that speed!
-Plastic steering knuckle screw hole stripped, so I bought a complete HobbyPark aluminum kit for front and rear, and steering servo hardware (~$26)
-Front bumper broke after running into curbs, etc. (~$14)
-Stainless screw kit (~$32), some of the original
-Pinion gear (~$6)
-Steel spur gear (~$13)
I think most adults would be bored of the speed out of the box after a few runs, which is why you should probably consider just buying a brushless truck in the first place. But, it's probably great for a kid who is learning or an adult who wants to build confidence.
Pros:
-Comes fully assembled "ready to run."
-Comes with a basic battery and charger
-Pretty good remote control
-Parts are easy to get and not expensive
Cons:
-Durability. On 50% of my runs, a screw falls out, or something in the suspension/drive train falls apart. Without even crashing or bashing!
-For an adult, I'd say it runs pretty slow. Buy a brushless truck or be ready to spend on upgrades.
It currently gets up to maybe 35 mph on a 2S battery with my brushless upgrade. I've done the suspension/steering adjustments, and it's consistently hard to drive this thing straight on anything other than pavement. The handling is definitely subpar, especially at speed. That's why I won't even try a 3S battery. Surprisingly, the differentials haven't gone out yet.
Now that I've had a chance to try other RCs, for an adult, I'd say just get the Team Redcat TR-SC10E. It's brushless, more durable, and a real value at $196 for a new one. Or try the TR-MT10E for $264. I can say with absolute confidence, DO NOT buy the Volcano EPX Pro which is brushless. It's the same exact thing as the Volcano EPX but just with brushless ESC and motor. The problem is, the rest of the truck kinda sucks! Step up to something that can actually handle the speed. If you're trying to stay in budget with Traxxas, try the 2WD Rustler or Slash. Their basic brushed models run as fast as the Volcano on brushless, and come with more metal parts (gears) out of the box.
Best of luck!
