Update: Maybe it was the Duracell battery it came with, but my first battery change was just today after only about 3 weeks! Come on, far cry from "up to 8 months". I use it near daily, but other wireless mice by Logitech that I have used, have always lasted at least 6 months for me. So I wasn't expecting 8 months. But 3 weeks? I just put new Energizer batteries in it, so we will see if it was just the included batteries. I hope it is. I shouldn't have to use the switch on the bottom every time I stop using the mouse. If I had to do that, I would be switching it off 10+ times a day, and that would just be pointless. Seems the switch would only be for traveling and storage use. Otherwise it should be smart enough to sleep when idle.
If this 2nd time doesn't last a ton longer, I will just go back to a wired mouse and just use this wireless one ONLY for travel. But I really hope it was just the included batteries.
Update 2: 2012.08.18 The battery life appears to have only been a big issue with the batteries it came with. New Kirkland brand batteries last a long time, I haven't measured it exactly, but many months vs the 3 weeks I got with the batteries it came with. So I am happy. I still use this mouse with several laptops and my HTPC.
Update 3: 2013.09.01, Another year of perfect use with this mouse. I take it when traveling, use it daily with a laptop at home and my HTPC. It gets a lot of use. Battery life is still great when using quality batteries. Scroll wheel and buttons all function as good as new and it's almost 3 years old with a lot of use. Now using it with Windows 8 as well.
Update 4: 2013.09.04, I know have received my 2nd Loch Ness Gray mouse from Amazon. It is suppose to be the exact same product. But it's not. I won't detract any stars though. As for the most part it's the same. And as far as using the mouse, it's still great. They changed a few things.
The model I reviewed above is model 1427, which I bought in 2010. The mouse I just got today, is model 1571.
1427:
* Has a slot for the nano receiver with an eject button.
* Scroll wheel has noticed movement, with a slightly audible sound when scrolling. Ultra quiet.
1571:
* Slot for nano receiver is UNDER the batter cover and no eject button.
* Scroll wheel has noticed movement, but is completely silent. You literally have to put the mouse next to your ear to kind of hear it. Same feel under the finger as the 1427 model.
The Bluetrack "hole" sensor is different and smaller on the 1571, but it seems to track exactly the same as the 1427 on the surfaces I have tried, including wood textures. Hopefully the batter life is just as good on the 1527. I wish Amazon didn't get rid of user-uploaded photos so I could show the differences side by side.
Another note, someone I know just got the Magenta Pink one from Amazon in the mail today and it is using the same design as the 1427 mouse. So it appears there are at least 2 designs currently being sold under the same "3500" model name.
I have two of these, love them, they're the perfect size and work great. Over my many years using computers I've had many different types, I prefer the Microsoft equipment and this one is just perfect.
Some other reviews complained about the click noise or the on-off switch. Yes, the click noise is a *little* louder than with many mice. Tho easily annoyed by gadget noises, I do not mind the click noise. Dependence on an old-fashioned manual on-off switch has the obvious disadvantage of running the battery down quickly if U forget to turn the mouse off. There are also some unobvious advantages. I was pleasantly surprized by how easily I formed the habit of turning wireless mice off when going away from the computer for more than a few minutes. (Full disclosure: I am ancient enough to have grown up in a world where everything needed a manual on-off switch.) It would be nice if the tiny green LED that glows briefly when the mouse is turned on would stay on, as a visual cue that mouse is on. Maybe the LED blinks or glows red when the battery is low; otherwise it would be totally useless.
Footnotes: (1) Tho the package lists nothing earlier than Win Vista, the mouse works fine on a Win XP machine also. Just plug in the dongle. U only need Vista or later if U want to program the scroll wheel to be a "middle button" as well as a scroll wheel. (2) The blue light really does let the mouse work on myriad surfaces, but switching from a mouse with red light will speed up the pointer motion. Go into Control Panel and take the mouse pointer speed down 2 notches, if U want to keep your old speed. (3) The "Loch Ness Gray" color is what I would have called "dark silver" -- brighter and much better looking than the very dark gray that appears when U look at the available colors online. (4) I accidentally dropped the mouse from about 3 feet above a vinyl floor; only damage was a barely visible scuff; no functional impairment at all.
